Ligue 1 outfit Monaco are widely regarded as one of the best clubs in the world at developing and improving players.

They also have a reputation for signing potential superstars and later selling them for a huge profit.

A fair few stars of the modern game have turned out for Monaco in the past, including the likes of James Rodriguez, Youri Tielemans, Bernardo Silva, Thierry Henry and more.

And then there are players such as Kylian Mbappe and Layvin Kurzawa who have come out of the Monaco academy.

Of all the stars who have played for the club, who will make it into an ultimate Monaco dream team?

    Fabien Barthez | Goalkeeper

    The first-choice goalkeeper for the French national team for a long time, Barthez was possibly more known for his stint with Manchester United.

    But he played for Monaco before that and made a big impact.

    After turning out for the likes of Toulouse and Marseille, Barthez moved to Monaco in 1995, making 189 appearances in all competitions for the club, winning two Ligue 1 and a Trophee des Champions titles.

    Characterized by his bald head, Barthez was not a tall goalkeeper, but had good physical ability and amazing reflexes.

    He spent five years at Monaco before joining United in 2000.

    Maicon | Defender

    In the late 2000s, Maicon was praised as "the world's best full-back" for his overwhelming attacking abilities.

    He played at Monaco for two years from 2004 to 2006 and made 81 appearances. Although he failed to win a major title at Monaco, he caught the attention of Inter with his fine performances.

    Maicon was known for physicality, speed, and stamina to run up and down the right wing. He also had the ability to send in high-precision crosses and had a powerful shot on him.

    During his six years at Inter, he won Serie A four times and won the Champions League.

    Lilian Thuram | Defender

    Legendary French defender Lilian Thuram, who is famous for scoring two spectacular goals in the 1998 France World Cup semi-final against Croatia, was a Monaco youth product.

    He became a regular player shortly after making his professional debut in 1991 and made 186 appearances in all competitions before moving to Parma in 1996.

    A defender who could play as a right-back and a centre-back with no issues whatsoever, Thuram was one of the best in the world during the '90s and early '00s.

    He ended up playing for the likes of Juventus and Barcelona during his career.

    With 142 national team caps, he is still holds the record of having made the most appearances for France.

    Eric Abidal | Defender

    Abidal, one of Barcelona's sextuplet winners of 2008/09 season, also played for Monaco in his youth and made his first-team debut at the age of 21.

    He was a bit of a late bloomer, though, and only really established himself as a world-class player after leaving the club, impressing for Lille and Lyon before earning himself a move to Camp Nou.

    At Barcelona, he played nearly 200 official games between 2007-2013 and was part of Pep Guardiola's great Barcelona side, winning 16 titles.

    He had a liver tumor in 2011 that nearly put him on the verge of retirement, but he made a miraculous comeback and continued playing. In 2013-14, he returned to Monaco for one season.

    After retiring in 2014, he held several directorial positions at Barcelona.

    Patrice Evra | Defender

    Evra is a Manchester United great, having represented the club with distinction from 2006 to 2014.

    However, the left-back previously made a name for himself at Monaco. In 2002, Evra joined Monaco, then coached by Didier Deschamps, and played 162 official matches before being signed by Manchester United in 2006.

    Although he only won the Coupe de la Ligue title, he played in all 13 games of the 2003/04 Champions League campaign, leading the team to the final against Porto.

    After his Manchester United adventure, Evra would end up playing for the likes of Juventus, Marseille and West Ham before retiring in 2019.

    Known as the “Emperor of Mexico", Rafael Marquez boasts five consecutive appearances at the World Cup from 2002 to 2018 and captained the Mexican national team for many years.

    In addition to being a center back, he was equally capable of playing as a defensive midfielder and was also known for his prowess from free-kicks.

    He played for Monaco for four seasons from 1999-2003 before moving up to Barcelona.

    At the Catalans, ​​he won the trust of Frank Rijkaard and Pep Guardiola, winning 12 trophies in seven seasons.

    He joined Monaco in 2014, then coached by fellow countryman Leonardo Jardim, and excelled in a variety of positions, from attacking midfield and right wing to central midfield.

    In the 2016-17 season, he was a key player behind Monaco's run to the semifinals of the Champions League.

    It was no surprise when Manchester City signed him in 2017 and he has further enhanced his reputation under Pep Guardiola, earning a reputation as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

    Kylian Mbappe is not just one of the best forwards in the world currently, but he is also a Monaco youth product.

    He made a name for himself at the club after making his senior team debut in December 2015 and his overwhelming speed and impeccable finishing ability was evident right from a young age.

    His talent only became known to the wider world in the 2016-17 season, though, as he scored six goals in the Champions League to help the club reach the last four.

    He scored against the likes of Manchester City and Juventus, showing that he had the potential to be one of the best in the world.

    In the summer of 2017, he joined Paris Saint-Germain on loan with an option to buy and he is now one of the highest-paid players in the world at PSG.

    The prolific French forward joined Monaco in 1995 and scored 62 goals in 123 official games in five years.

    In addition to leading the club to two league titles, he won the World Cup and the Euros with France during his tenure at Monaco.

    After leaving Monaco, he played 318 games with Juventus and scored 171 goals.

    With good physical ability and an outstanding sense of positioning, Trezeguet was also strong aerially and had a keen nose for goals.

    After leaving Juventus, he played in Spain, the UAE, Argentina and India, before hanging up his boots in 2015.

    Thierry Henry | Forward

    The legendary Thierry Henry was an absolute star for Arsenal, helping them win countless trophies and is their all-time top goalscorer with 228 goals.

    However, Henry started his career at Monaco before he moved to Italy and then England. He spent five seasons at Monaco, where he first worked under Arsene Wenger, who would go on to manage him at Arsenal later.

    Henry's quality was evident quite early in his Monaco career and he was named the French Young Footballer of the Year in 1996. The following season, he helped the club win Ligue 1.

    He left Monaco in 1999 and joined Juventus for a brief stint, before he would move to Arsenal and eventually represented the likes of Barcelona and New York Red Bulls.
