Terry Venables: Former England, Barcelona and Tottenham manager passes away aged 80 after long illness

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    The League Managers' Association (LMA) confirmed the death of the ex-Chelsea, Tottenham and England midfielder on Sunday. Venables, whose career as a player and manager spanned almost 50 years, endured a long battle with illness before passing away.

    WHAT VENABLES' FAMILY SAID

    A statement from his family read: "We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness. "We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives."

    After hanging up his boots following spells at the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham, Venables went on to manage Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers before guiding Barcelona to a La Liga title in 1985 and reaching the European Cup final the following year. He also won the FA Cup with Tottenham and then took England to the semi-finals at Euro 96.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

    Venables was part of two FA Cup-winning teams with Tottenham. He was in the starting XI as Spurs beat Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley to secure the trophy in 1967. Then, in 1991, he guided a team that included the likes of Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker to victory in extra time against Nottingham Forest.

    WHAT NEXT?

    It is not yet known when or where Venables will be laid to rest following his passing. It is likely that former club Spurs will pay tribute to him ahead of their game against Aston Villa on Sunday.
