Messi Reus Ramos splitGetty/GOAL

Sergio Ramos, Marco Reus and the European-based stars linked with joining Lionel Messi in MLS this summer

Summer is almost upon us, and with it comes a new flurry of MLS transfer talk. For years, MLS has been at the center of the always-moving rumor mill and, with Lionel Messi now running riot in the league, stars all over the world are being linked with a move to North America.

Messi has already brought his friends with him to Inter Miami, but they're far from the first stars to play in MLS. The U.S. has been drawing in some of the game's biggest names for years, although that's all intensified since the Argentinian icon stepped foot in Florida.

So, who will join Messi this summer? Which European stars are being linked with big MLS moves? And, most importantly, which of the league's clubs are in contention to make these dream deals a reality?

GOAL takes a look...

The Real Madrid legend has been linked to MLS several times in recent years, most notably to Inter Miami. It seems, though, that his next move may actually bring him to the league's newest club.

According to reports, Ramos is in talks to join San Diego FC ahead of the club's 2025 debut. Ramos is set to be a free agent this summer and isn't expected to renew with boyhood club Sevilla, opening the door for a possible MLS move.

How would he fare? Well, we haven't seen many, if any, defenders of Ramos' caliber come stateside. Even in his advancing years, the Spanish legend could almost certainly be a good building block for an expansion club.

Ramos isn't the only star linked to San Diego.

Mexican star Lozano is also rumored to be a target for San Diego ahead of the club's expansion season. The winger is currently at PSV, where he won the Eredivisie title this season alongside U.S. men's national team stars Sergino Dest, Ricardo Pepi and Malik Tillman.

Lozano, though, poured cold water on the rumor, telling ESPN Netherlands: “Well, I'd like to go to Liga MX. Pachuca gave me many things, it gave me the opportunity to be in the first division. If I return to Mexico, I think the first option would be Pachuca.”

  • Kevin De Bruyne Man City 2023-24Getty Images

    Kevin de Bruyne

It would be a surprising one, given how good the midfielder still is, but De Bruyne has long been linked with an MLS move.

Reports say the Manchester City star is seriously considering quitting the Etihad and apparently favours MLS over the Saudi Pro League. If he does move on, his international teammate, D.C. United star Christian Benteke, says the midfield maestro would be a perfect fit in Hollywood.

“He's 32 and he's been around in Europe for many, many years,” Benteke told MLSSoccer.com. “I can see him at a team in LA.”

He still has a potential fairytale ending on the horizon in the Champions League final, but Reus' next move may be to the U.S.

St. Louis City SC have been heavily linked with the Borussia Dortmund legend, who is set to leave his childhood club this summer. He'll hope to leave with a trophy in hand as Dortmund prepare to face Real Madrid in the Champions League final but, after that, St. Louis may be next.

Also interested in Reus? Inter Miami, although St. Louis seems the better fit for the German star.

  • Luka Modric Real Madrid 2023-24Getty Images

    Luka Modric

It seems Modric's legendary career at Real Madrid is nearing an end and, like Reus, he'll be looking to go out on a high. After that, though?

The Croatian has been linked with Inter Miami, although the Herons don't have infinite money to spend. And, with Sergio Busquets already providing the veteran experience in that midfield, it would be a tough fit.

This is Modric we're talking about, though. He's an all-time great for a reason, and any MLS team would be lucky to have him running their midfield for however long he has left.

    Nacho Fernandez

Modric isn't the only Real Madrid star on the move, as the club's captain looks even more likely to come to MLS.

Marca reports that the defender wants a move to the U.S. and will turn down offers from Saudi Arabia to make that happen. No clubs have been linked just yet, but many could use a defender of that quality if the money is right.

The Spaniard doesn't have the name recognition of many other's on this list but, make no mistake, he'd be solid.

  • Giroud Milan GenoaGetty

This one's already done. Giroud is heading to Los Angeles.

The French star has signed with LAFC and will join the club this summer from AC Milan. Giroud should be a formidable presence in MLS, having scored 14 goals in Serie A this season. With Giroud leading the line, LAFC should be among the best in MLS.

    Antoine Griezmann

The French star has flirted with MLS for years. He's a huge fan of American culture, particularly American sports, and he's said several times that he hopes to spend his final few years stateside.

Griezmann has admitted that Atletico Madrid will be his last club in Europe. Could it finally be time for him to come on his long-awaited American adventure?

  • Angel Di Maria Argentina 2024Getty Images

    Angel Di Maria

    Surely they couldn't, could they?

Inter Miami have been linked with another huge star in Di Maria, who could unite with longtime international teammate Messi in South Florida. At 36, Di Maria is in his final years, but is still a key figure for Benfica and the Argentina national team, showing that he has plenty left in the tank.

Inter Miami boss Tata Martino denied that a move was imminent, though, citing the financial factors.

"There is no need for me to talk about the qualities that Angel [Di Maria] has," Martino said. "Honestly, and beyond the fact that there are almost two months to go before the transfer window reopens, I'm struggling to find a way for Inter Miami to sign him. I can't think of any, so I don't have much more to say."

Still, stranger things have happened. If Miami can convince both Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba to sign on the cheap, why not Di Maria?
