Nabi exit GFX GOAL

Pitso Mosimane, Jose Riveiro free agents as Kazier Chiefs set to officially part ways with Nasreddine Nabi - Benni McCarthy remains a popular option for PSL giants

According to multiple sources, the Tunisian tactician has been shown the exit door after allegedly failing to provide a valid coaching license.

Yes, you read that right - no valid CAF A License, no spot on the Amakhosi bench. With Chiefs gearing up for their Caf Confederation Cup first-round qualifier against Angola’s Kabuscorp S.C.P this Saturday, Nabi will reportedly be absent from the technical area. His license, we're told, has not been renewed - leaving him ineligible to lead the team from the dugout.

Neither Chiefs nor Nabi's camp have released an official statement, but the silence is loud. And in football, where there's smoke, there's usually a bonfire. So, if the rumours are indeed true, who takes the reins at Naturena? The Motaungs have no shortage of options - and some of the names being floated are nothing short of headline material.

GOAL takes a closer look at the possible contenders should Nabi’s time at Chiefs come to an abrupt end.

Jose Riveiro: A Soweto switch that would break hearts

Imagine the unthinkable - Jose Riveiro crossing the Soweto divide. The Spaniard is beloved by Orlando Pirates fans after delivering a treasure chest of silverware. But after a brief and turbulent stint at Egypt’s Al Ahly, he finds himself a free agent. Would he wear the gold and black? Riveiro once declared he'd never coach another team in South Africa, but in football, such vows often dissolve under the weight of opportunity. His move to Chiefs would not only shake the PSL to its core, but it might even stir up the spirits of Pirates legends like "Mgijimi" and Dejan Miladinovic. Chaos, anyone?

Keep It In-House: Youssef & Kaze

Sometimes, the answers lie within. With Nabi attending to personal matters following his wife’s car accident, assistants Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze have admirably stepped up. Under their temporary stewardship, Chiefs bagged four straight wins to start the Premiership season. This isn't their first rodeo - last season, when Nabi was suspended, the duo took charge and secured two wins from two. Could Chiefs embrace a co-coaching structure reminiscent of successful partnerships elsewhere in world football? Their record speaks for itself.

    Go Rogue: The unknown factor

If you look at Irvin Khoza’s playbook at Pirates, sometimes the gem lies in the unfamiliar. He unearthed names like Jozef Zinnbauer and Jose Riveiro, both of whom defied expectations. Sure, Kjell Jonevret was a misfire, but the gamble occasionally pays off. Enter the idea of going left-field. Think Abdeslam Ouaddou at Marumo Gallants - virtually unknown before arriving, now an MTN8 champion in his debut campaign. Maybe it’s time the Motaungs dig deep for a tactical disruptor with a fresh approach, regardless of how slim the CV looks on paper.

    Benni McCarthy: The people's choice

Benni McCarthy’s name always finds its way into the conversation when a high-profile coaching seat opens in South Africa. From nearly bagging the Bafana Bafana job in 2021 to coaching at Manchester United, Benni’s coaching career is as magnetic as his playing days. His tenure at Cape Town City brought a Telkom Knockout title, while a stellar run with AmaZulu earned him PSL Coach of the Season honours and a spot in the Caf Champions League. Now leading Kenya’s national team, Benni may just be the modern, fearless tactician Amakhosi needs to reignite their glory days.

    Pitso Mosimane: The mastermind-in-waiting

When you're talking about heavyweight candidates, Pitso "Jingles" Mosimane is impossible to ignore. Decorated, battle-hardened, and hungry for a new challenge, Mosimane has lifted trophies across the continent, from Mamelodi Sundowns to Al Ahly, including three Caf Champions League titles and multiple top-three Club World Cup finishes. But there's one thing missing from his illustrious resume: A Soweto Derby. Could this be the moment he adds Amakhosi to his legendary portfolio? Jobless since January, Mosimane has made it clear: if the project is right, he’s ready to return.
