    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates have registered their only pre-season win after seeing off Granada 2-0 in a friendly match at Marbella Centre on Saturday.

Unlike in their game against Las Palmas, where they started hungrier and determined, against Granada, Pirates were a little bit cautious.

However, in the 17th minute, they threatened when Boitumelo Radiopane and Sinoxolo Kwayiba produced an ambitious forward move, but Simphiwe Selepe's final shot was blocked by Granada's goalkeeper, Luca Zidane.

Kwayiba was involved in another run that threatened Granada in the 19th minute when he spotted Tshepang Moremi, but the winger saw his effort saved rather easily.

Karim Kimvuidi and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who were involved in an unsuccessful dangerous move in the 24th minute, again combined in the 43rd minute, but the later sent his effort wide from close range.

Relebohile Mofokeng, who scored against Pafos, was denied a goal by a fine save pulled off by goalkeeper Ander Astralaga in the 56th minute.

Finally, Pirates broke the deadlock when Patrick Maswanganyi slotted past Astralaga in the 80th minute. Mofokeng ensured that Pirates earned their first win in Spain when he scored in the 90th minute.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After the trip, Abdeslam Ouaddou will now have time to assess all departments of his team. The Pirates' backline conceded two goals against Bolton Wanderers and one against Pafos, and kept a clean sheet against Las Palmas and Granada.

The striking department also showed some brilliant combinations, with Mofokeng showing that he is ready to deliver again.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PIRATES?

On August 2, the Sea Robbers will begin their MTN8 title defence campaign with a quarter-final clash against Polokwane City.

When the season curtain raiser ends, focus will shift to the 2025/26 Premier Soccer League campaign, where Bucs are set to host Sekhukhune United on August 9 for their opening game.
