Monnapule Saleng & Neo Maema struggle to inspire Bafana Bafana but USA-bound Jamie Webber rescues South Africa from 2024 Chan qualifiers defeat against Egypt

Bafana Bafana hosted Egypt in a 2024 African Nations Championship qualifier final round, first leg, with the match ending in a draw.

With Bafana Bafana missing a glut of chances, they were duly punished when Mohamed Hassan Abdelaal struck in the 66th minute to give Egypt the lead.

But the home side replied in style via Jamie Webber, whose terrific shot from outside the box gave the Pharaohs' goalkeeper, Mahmoud Kassen no chance with 10 minutes remaining.

It ended 1-1 with the visitors enjoying the advantage of an away goal.

USA-bound Webber delivered where it mattered the most for South Africa.

This Bafana squad, which included experienced Premier Soccer League players, was staring defeat and humiliation on home soi,l but Webber came through with a cracker to light up the evening.

After conceding a goal at home, Molefi Ntseki's side left themselves with the mammoth task of making Egypt's goal not count in the second leg.

But their opponents would want to enjoy the advantage of Abdelaal's goal when they play on their home turf.

The Pharaohs will host Bafana at Suez Canal Stadium next Sunday with their heads held high following their positive away result.

The winner on aggregate or penalties will then face either Malawi or Comoros in the second round to determine who qualifies for the Chan finals.
