Man Utd loanee power rankings: Mason Greenwood stays top as Jadon Sancho disappoints - but Hannibal Mejbri's Sevilla switch is turning into a disaster

David Beckham was the set-piece specialist for almost all of his Manchester United career. But his first free-kick goal as a professional was not for the Red Devils, it was for Preston North End. Beckham also honed his ability for pin-point corners while at Deepdale, where he spent an invaluable year on loan in the 1994-95 season, returning to Old Trafford as a man ready to take on the world.

Beckham is probably the most high-profile United player to benefit from a spell out on loan, but he is in good company. Jonny Evans cut his teeth in senior football on loan at Sunderland, playing for Roy Keane. And if that doesn't prepare you for professional life, then nothing will. “Playing under Roy was fantastic, I loved it,” he recalled. “He was very demanding of his players, but that’s what I was used to. That was such a fantastic period of my career.”

Diogo Dalot reignited his United career after a slow start with the help of a loan spell at AC Milan, while Amad Diallo had a sensational last season with Sunderland, propelling the Black Cats into the play-offs with 17 goals. He was so good that United felt compelled to keep him, but an untimely injury during pre-season tour has contributed to him making just two substitute appearances so far this campaign.

GOAL runs the rule over United's five current players who are out on loan and hoping to benefit from some regular football and time away from the spotlight of Old Trafford...

    10Hannibal Mejbri (Sevilla) - 2/10 🌟

If the aim of a loan move is to get more playing time and improve your reputation, then Hannibal's sojourn with Sevilla is definitely not going as planned. The Tunisia midfielder had a penchant for reckless tackles while at United and did not help his cause by getting booked within a minute of making his debut from the bench in a 5-1 thrashing by Girona.

He was then dropped from the squad amid reports of a fight with team-mate Mariano, with the club releasing a statement saying they had to "give him the necessary space to understand where he is". He has played just eight minutes of football since then, enough time to pick up another yellow card.

  • Alvaro Fernandez BenficaGetty

    9Alvaro Fernandez (Benfica) - 4/10 ⬇️

There were some calls for United to keep Fernandez after a positive season on loan at Preston, but he was sent out again to Granada on deadline day. He had fleeting moments to remember in La Liga, making just five starts and eight appearances off the bench for the struggling Andalusians. The loan deal was cut short by United in January so he could join Benfica on loan, with the option of a permanent move in the summer.

Given United's horrid injury luck with left-backs - Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are currently out - Fernandez might have been better off staying at Old Trafford as he has played just 27 minutes of league football for Benfica, although he has been getting starts in the domestic cup and the Europa League.

  • Donny van de Beek Eintracht Frankfurt 2023-24Getty Images

    8Donny van de Beek (Eintracht Frankfurt) - 4/10 🌟

The Dutch midfielder's time at United was a list of disappointments and defeats, most notably a serious knee injury in January 2023. Frankfurt have given him the opportunity to get his stalling career back on track and he is slowly doing that, making five Bundesliga starts in an unbeaten run. He is yet to pull up any trees and still looks nothing like the player he was at Ajax but at least he is playing football again.

  • Daniel Gore Man UtdGetty

    7Dan Gore (Port Vale) - 4/10 🌟

The captain of United's under-21 side had made small inroads into the first team, getting substitutes' appearances in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace and in the Premier League against Aston Villa. Port Vale provided him hope of more regular senior football but he has played just one game in League One and has been out since mid-February with an injury.

  • Brandon Williams IpswichGetty

    6Brandon Williams (Ipswich Town) - 5/10 ⬇️

Williams had a torrid last season at United in which he failed to play a single of minute under Ten Hag, but he is enjoying a renaissance on loan at Ipswich under Kieran McKenna, who was the defender's coach at Under-18 level.

The full-back has made 17 appearances and played his part in helping Ipswich's push towards automatic promotion.

He has scored two goals, an 87th-minute equaliser at Huddersfield and a stunning solo goal in a 4-2 win over Preston. However, he has not featured since late December due to a groin issue and is currently receiving medical treatment back with United, suffering a setback in his recovery plan.

  • Jadon Sancho Dortmund 2023-24Getty Images

    5Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) - 5/10 🌟

Sancho looked reinvigorated when he sealed a return to Dortmund after being expelled from the United squad for speaking out against Ten Hag. He barely needed 20 minutes to make his first contribution, setting up a goal for Marco Reus in an easy win at Darmstadt and earning a penalty against Koln.

Reports of his rebirth have proved to be exaggerated, however, as he has done little of note since. And he was subjected to fierce criticism in the German media after a poor display in the recent defeat by Hoffenheim. Needless to say, United are not missing much, although they will find it hard to make any money off his inevitable sale in the summer.

  • Joe Hugill Man UtdGetty

    4Joe Hugill (Burton Albion) - 6/10 🌟

The centre-forward featured in United's pre-season matches but is still yet to make his first team debut. Burton Albion have offered him a taste of more regular senior football and he is making the most of the opportunity, scoring on his debut against Derby and getting an assist on his home bow against Charlton.

It has not been all plain sailing though as he was hooked at half-time against Cambridge United in his next outing and has made just two appearances from the bench since.

  • Will Fish Hibernian 2023-24Getty Images

    3Will Fish (Hibernian) - 6/10 ⬇️

The defender is back on loan with Hibs for the second season in a row and has been an integral part of Nick Montgomery's side, playing every minute so far in the Scottish Premiership. Hibs climbed up to fourth in the Scottish Premiership before the new year, with Fish playing a big part in their upswing in form, which was built on defensive solidity (four clean sheets in eight games).

They have struggled for consistency in 2024 and have slipped down to sixth but Fish remains one of the first names on the team sheet.

  • Facundo Pellistri GranadaGetty

    2Facundo Pellistri (Granada) - 7/10 🌟

Pellistri sought a loan move after getting frustrated with a lack of minutes with United and is certainly getting that at Granada and more. The Uruguayan was instrumental to his side claiming a 3-3 draw away to Barcelona, scoring one goal and setting up another.

He has also helped the struggling Andalusians halt a spiral of negative results: they had lost three matches in a row before he arrived but have been unbeaten in their last three games, giving them a flicker of hope in their bid to avoid relegation.

  • Jude Bellingham Mason Greenwood Real Madrid Getafe 2023-24Getty

    1Mason Greenwood (Getafe) - 8/10 ↔️

Greenwood never would have envisaged spending a year with Getafe after breaking into Solskjaer's side and signing a senior contract with United. But that shocking and harrowing social media post that emerged in January 2022 turned his career upside down, and after all charges against him were eventually dropped, Getafe emerged as the most unlikely of places for him to resume his career.

Greenwood is clearly Getafe's most talented player and is becoming one of their most important too. He has scored five times in La Liga while adding five assists, and struck a contender for Goal of the Season with a tremendous strike against Almeria in November. He had an unsavoury confrontation with Jude Bellingham at the start of February but has since scored a penalty against Real Betis and set up a last-minute winner for team-mate Jaime Mata against Celta Vigo.

He has helped lift Getafe up to 10th place in La Liga and has got his career back on track, attracting the attention of bigger clubs, with Barcelona leading the list of teams that are interested in taking him. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has also opened the door to the prospect of him returning to United, something which seemed unthinkable when he left for Getafe.
