  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa has insisted that he undoubtedly joined the right club in Mzansi amidst his impressive displays.

The 26-year-old has thus far netted 12 goals and supplied 10 assists across all competitions, which justifies the hype he has been receiving from South African football fans.

Ribeiro has proven to be a vital player in Miguel Cardoso's team this season, and he believes that the bond he has with his teammates will elevate the team to new heights.

    WHAT RIBEIRO SAID

"With the schedule that we have at the club, it is kind of difficult to maintain the same performance at the highest level, but the ultimate goal is to play there (highest level)," Ribeiro said per KickOff.

"We play games every three games, so the performance varies in that. But then the goal is always to play and perform at the highest level.

"However, with the travelling and games that come back and forth, sometimes there will be that drop in terms of the performance of the game, but it doesn’t mean one doesn’t desire to achieve more. I never imagined that I would be at this point in my life and career," he added.

"But I’m grateful to my teammates who are helping me and the opportunity to be playing for the club after having come to the right place. For me, it is not about being a good player but more a good person, which is the ultimate thing."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ribeiro is currently the top scorer in the league with nine goals, competing for the prestigious Golden Boot award alongside teammate Iqraam Rayners and several others.

With the numbers he has accumulated so far, the left-footed forward is undoubtedly a contender for the PSL's major honours, including Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Year, amongst other esteemed recognitions.

Additionally, local football enthusiasts have been advocating for the Brazilian attacking midfielder to be included in the Bafana Bafana squad by Hugo Broos when he is eligible to represent SA.

It remains to be seen whether the outspoken Belgian tactician will heed the recommendations when the time is appropriate or not.

    WHAT NEXT?

Given his consistent performances each week, it seems highly probable that Ribeiro will end the season as a leading goal scorer, provided he does not sustain any injuries moving forward.

The lefty will aim to increase his goal tally when Sundowns face off against TS Galaxy on Tuesday evening, followed by a match against Mpheni Home Defenders in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 next Sunday.
