    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs have been struggling in their bid to challenge for the Premier Soccer League title.

That has exposed their transfer needs to beef up their squad during the current window.

But they are yet to officially announce a new signing and club sporting director Kaizer Motaing Jnr defends their approach in the market.

    WHAT MOTAUNG JNR SAID

“We brought in about seven players, new technical stuff, and I think everyone saw exactly how the season began from a technical perspective,” Kaizer Jnr said as per iDiski Times.

“Of course, the season as you know there’s been a lot of changes. We’ve always requested for the supporters and the stakeholders to understand.

“Having said all of that, we deliberately took the approach of signing from the back first. Foundation was very important to us and I think it’s kind of a conundrum now looking at that. We’ve conceded the goals that we’ve conceded.

“But the plan has always been the same – to begin with reinforcing the foundation, the defence and then move forward. If you look, we went to sign, I think it was Gaston Sirino as our first offensive player," added the former Amakhosi attacker.

“With a plan for identifying each window. We know it’s a very important question that will probably come to us about this window, but looking at having done that, still topping the charts with many of the attacking stats.

“We’ve scored the third highest amount of goals, even with that approach, I think the chances that we created, the chances that they’ve been missing. If we had taken the chances we created and not conceded, it’s ifs and buts," he continued.

“But at the end of the day, we are very confident of the direction we’re going in and with all those perimeters having been met this season, I think that we could be in a very different position in terms of the league standings.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chiefs have scored 17 league goals in 14 games and only Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have managed more goals than them, each having found the back of the net 22 times.

But there were high expectations that coach Nasreddine Nabi would make a number of signings this January.

This comes as Chiefs struggle to challenge for the PSL title and Nabi himself has stated the need for signing players, especially a striker.

Amakhosi have had reported transfer target Ruben del Campo allegedly snubbing them for a Spanish club while the likes of Oswin Appollis and Fawaaz Basadien are uncertain of moving to Naturena.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

The January player transfer window is slowly approaching closure and it is to be seen which players Chiefs will sign.

For now, their focus is on hosting semi-professional side Free Agents in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 before facing Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby on February 1.
