It's time for Kaizer Chiefs to prove they are a big club by beating Siwelele and Simba in the space of four days

The stage is set and the anticipation is palpable, as Kaizer Chiefs, one of the most storied football clubs, are gearing up for two crucial matches in a space of four days.

Amakhosi are set to face Siwelele FC in the league at FNB Stadium on Wednesday before locking horns with AS Simba in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round.

The matches are more than just two games; it’s an opportunity for Chiefs to prove their mettle, to demonstrate their strength, and to solidify their position as a top contender for major trophies domestically and on the African continent.

As Chiefs prepare for a crunch Siwelele tie, they’ll be looking to return to winning ways after going two matches without claiming a win in the league. The league clash will be followed by the Confederation Cup encounter against a DRC side, with a spot in the group stages at stake.

Chiefs played to a goalless draw against AS Simba at TP Mazembe Stadium this past weekend, and they’ll be looking to win the return leg to advance to the next stage of the competition.

    Squad depth

In the previous transfer window, Chiefs were one of the most active clubs in the market, making 11 new signings in an effort to build a squad with enough depth and quality to challenge for trophies in South Africa and on the continent.

The Soweto giants signed Ethan Chislett, Nkanyiso Shinga, Flavio Silva, Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Asanele Velebayi, Etiosa Ighodaro, Luke Baartman, Lebohang Maboe and Khanyisa Mayo.

After assembling such a formidable squad, Chiefs should have what it takes to play against the continent on the weekend, and have enough in reserve to beat domestic rivals in the league.

Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef

Kaze and Ben Youssef have taken over the hot seat at Chiefs after the club parted ways with head coach Nasreddine Nabi a few weeks ago.

The coaching duo has been given the big task of leading Amakhosi for the remainder of the current season.

Kaze and Ben Youssef have served as assistant coaches to Nabi since July 2024, and they are likely to bring continuity to the club’s ambitions and style of play.

In the opening four matches of the season, Kaze and Ben Youssef led Chiefs to four successive league wins while the Tunisian coach was on compassionate leave.

There have been a few stumbles since then, but the co-coaches need to prove now that they themselves are Big Club material.

Mid-week PSL assignment versus Siwelele FC

Siwelele, who are new in the SA’s top-flight, are set to face Chiefs, eager to turn their fortunes after a dismal start to the season.

The Bloemfontein-based side purchased the status of SuperSport United in the off-season and have struggled for form under the guidance of Lehlohonolo Seema.

So far this season, Siwelele has collected just seven points in nine matches after registering only two wins, one draw, and six defeats.

Based on their recent form, which also saw them crash out of the Carling Knockout Last 16, Chiefs have a big chance of collecting all three points.

Weekend CAF Confederation Cup versus AS Simba

The Lubumbashi side is unlikely to pose a threat to Chiefs after struggling to win in front of their home fans. Against Simba, Chiefs created the most scoring chances; however, they were let down by their misfiring in attack.

Chiefs' best chance fell for the highly-rated striker Khanyisa Mayo on the stroke of half-time; however, the 27-year-old struck his powerful shot against the goal post.

A few minutes later, the 2025 Nedbank Cup winners had a penalty appeal after Glody Lilepo was brought down in the box; however, the referee waved play on.

Amakhosi had another golden opportunity in the second half, where Ashley Du Preez failed to convert with only an open net left to bury his chance.

Meanwhile, Simba have been playing friendly matches as they prepare for the 2025/26 Linafoot Group A Championship season and they are still in a pre-season mode.

    Home ground advantage

In both matches that Chiefs will play against Siwelele and Simba, they will have the home ground advantage and the backing of their own supporters.

The Naturena-based side will face welcome Siwelele at FNB Stadium on Wednesday before hosting Simba at Dobsonville Stadium over the weekend.

Chiefs have only lost once at home this season in seven matches across all competitions. They lost 3-1 against Sekhukhune United last month.

The odds are in favour of Kaizer Chiefs winning both matches to prove that they are a Big Club with big ambitions both domestically and on the African continent.
