    WHAT HAPPENED?

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has excluded Kaizer Chiefs players from the upcoming international friendly matches against Tanzania and Mozambique.

In his preliminary selection, Broos had included Amakhosi players like Yusuf Maart, Mduduzi Shabalala and goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.

But they have all been dropped from the final 23-man squad and Broos explains his decision.

    WHAT BROOS SAID

“For me, for the moment I can’t select players of Kaizer Chiefs,” said Broos as per iDiski Times.

“And I hope that they make a better season next year. Ok, they’ve won the Cup, but I think that was the only highlight in Chiefs’ season. All the rest was not so good.

“I don’t think… Okay, the supporters are very happy because they won the Cup, but we have to be honest and I don’t have anything against Chiefs, but I have to be honest in my choices," added the Belgian.

“And most of the time it was not good with Chiefs, it was not good! Otherwise a team like Chiefs is not number nine in the log, they are number three, number two or number one.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In recent years, Chiefs players have struggled to cement their place in the Bafana Bafana setup.

The likes of Keagan Dolly, Maart, Pule Mmodi, Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Ashley du Preez had their international careers go on a pause after joining Chiefs.

Coach Nasreddine Nabi needs to be moulding players who can cement their places in their various national sides, as Inacio Miguel has also lost his spot in the Angola national team.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

Nabi's focus is already on next season and he has been spotted in Tanzania on what is believed to be a scouting mission.

It is to be seen if he will be able to build a squad of international stars, including players who will go to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
