    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Mdantsane has tipped new Amakhosi signing Khanyisa Mayo to succeed in the Premier Soccer League.

Mayo completed a season-long deal from CR Belouizdad of Algeria to Naturena, and Mdantsane believes his former teammate at Cape Town City will have a successful period with the Soweto giants.

    WHAT MDANTSANE SAID

“Mayo is an outstanding player. He’s very good, and he’s that one guy who always wants to win. And with each opportunity he gets, he wants to win,” Mdantsane told FARPost.

“His personality is also enhanced by his football IQ. He’s a very competitive guy. He likes to compete. And it’s good for him because he improves each time,” he added.

“There was a time when I was the club’s leading top scorer at Cape Town City, and he’d been telling me every day at training that he was going to break the record. And that pushed him to fight even more every game like this. He eventually broke my record."

    WHAT IS MORE

Apart from tipping Mayo to succeed, Mdantsane has pointed out the best positions where Nasreddine Nabi should play the new signing.

“He always has that hunger to be in the box and score. So, with me, I would prefer him on the right wing because he likes to cut inside and just shoot. And he has that technique to do that,” Mdantsane explained.

“In every training session, he must always fight. It will never be easy. You’re not only getting pressure from the team but also pressure from outside. But the most important thing is that you must never focus much on what people are saying on the outside."

"The most important thing is that the coach is allowing you to play. Just do your best. Every game is a cup final at Chiefs.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chiefs finally landed their long-term target, and he adds to a long list of new players brought on board to strengthen an ambitious playing unit.

Mayo came back to PSL after the Algerian club, under former TS Galaxy head coach Sead Ramovic, did not register him for the new season.

Coincidentally, Mayo is joining the club that his father, Patrick Mayo, played for, and he had expressed hope that his son would in the future follow in his footsteps.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAYO?

After Chiefs gave him a second career chance after CR Belouizdad opted against having him for the 2025/26 season, Mayo has an opportunity to prove Ramovic wrong.

But the Bafana forward is going to face stiff competition at Chiefs given the number of new signings brought on board, especially to strengthen the attacking department.
