    WHAT HAPPENED?

Khanyisa Mayo joined Kaizer Chiefs on a season-long loan deal from Algerian side CR Belouizdad.

This was after he fell out of coach Sead Ramovic’s plans, who opted against having the 27-year-old forward registered for this season.

The striker’s agent, Basia Michaels, has revealed that there were offers for Mayo from clubs in Turkey, Iran and Kuwait and explains why the player chose to return home and join Amakhosi.

    WHAT MICHAELS SAID

“We had offers abroad, but in the end, for personal reasons, we felt it was best for Khanyisa to come back and join Chiefs,” Michaels told SABC Sport.
“I have to thank the sporting director, Kaizer Motaung Jr, for his persistence. This was a very difficult transaction, but he never gave up – and now Khanyisa follows in his father’s footsteps.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mayo will have a season in which he would be keen to prove Ramovic wrong and show the Belouizdad coach what he threw away.

But that would be a big task for the Bafana man, who is likely to face stiff competition for playing time at Amakhosi, given the number of forwards Chiefs have in their squad.

In recent seasons, the Soweto giants have been struggling to have a striker who scores at least 10 Premier Soccer League goals in one campaign.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAYO?

Mayo is expected to start training with Nasreddine Nabi’s squad and could be up for selection when Amakhosi return from the FIFA break to face Sekhukhune United.

Having been a PSL top goal-scorer before, Mayo already has a bar he set for himself to surpass.
