    WHAT HAPPENED

Kaizer Chiefs missed an opportunity to take an early lead in their match against Golden Arrows on Saturday when Yusuf Maart was denied by the upright post from the penalty spot.

The Soweto giants went on to lose that Premier Soccer League match at Moses Mabhida Stadium 2-1.

While Maart did not attempt a panenka, he was casual in his kick and former Amakhosi wideman Junior Khanye feels the Chiefs captain was trying to be slick like Orlando Pirates playmaker Patrick Maswanganyi.

    WHAT KHANYE SAID

“With regards to the penalty I know anyone can say Tito did a panenka but the difference is that Tito is on top of his game,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.

“Even if he had missed it no one can say anything because Tito can give you something tomorrow because he is consistent.

"But this guy Maart has not been consistent. He is experienced and has the armband but where does he get the confidence to want to do what he tried?

“Just go back and put power behind the ball if it’s saved it’s saved. I mean he is not consistent, and Chiefs is not doing well currently and then you do that," added the retired winger.

"The fact that he was given the armband also tells you about how average the squad is.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Khanye's remarks that Maart was picked to be Chiefs captain from a pool of average players is a topic which has interested fans.

It also brings discussions about how coach Nasreddine Nabi is going to conduct his business in the next transfer window to build a competitive side made up of quality players.

That is if he remains as Amakhosi coach as he is currently on the verge of matching Arthur Zwane as the Chiefs coach with the most PSL defeats in a single season during the PSL era.

Zwane recorded 12 defeats during the 2022/23 season and Nabi has so far guided the Soweto giants to 10 losses.

    WHAT'S NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

Just like Nabi, Maart is under pressure to show massive leadership in Chiefs' remaining seven league games and help the club to a top three finish.

There is also the Nedbank Cup to play for and the Soweto giants are again looking up to Maart's leadership skills.
