    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs won the 2024/25 Nedbank Cup but have been enduring a difficult Premier Soccer League campaign.

It has been Coach Nasreddine Nabi's first season with the Soweto giants after arriving at Naturena with so many expectations on him.

Former Chiefs captain Neil Tovey believes that lifting the Nedbank Cup will not count much due to a season dented by inconsistency in the PSL.

    WHAT TOVEY SAID

“While they won a trophy, the league standings are always the benchmark for evaluating our performance throughout the season," Tovey told KickOff.

“Chiefs have been poor, to be honest. In football, you are judged by your league position. Given the stature of Chiefs, they should be a top-three team... That’s really disappointing.

“It’s not good at all. Many can be held accountable for this, including the players and the coaching staff," added the Bafana Bafana 1996 Afcon-winning captain.

“Yes, they won a trophy for the first time in 10 years, which is unusual for Chiefs. Typically, they don’t go more than one or two years without a trophy.

“However, winning a trophy doesn’t equate to having a good season. You will ultimately be judged by your league position. Consistency is key.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Tovey is not impressed by Nabi and his players, another Chiefs legend and former Bafana captain, Lucas Radebe, is backing the Tunisian.

Radebe believes Nabi deserves another season at Amakhosi amid calls from some quarters that the former Young African coach should not be retained.

Should he remain at Chiefs, next season might not be a time for excuses and fans are likely not to have patience with him.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

The Soweto giants now head into the off-season break and will start preparing for next season.

There is a sense of anticipation to see if Nabi will be competitive in the transfer market and bring in quality players to Naturena.
