How England's Lionesses should line up vs Haiti in 2023 Women's World Cup opener: Red hot Rachel Daly deserves to start while Ella Toone gets chance to find form

England will get their 2023 Women's World Cup campaign underway on Saturday, with the European champions set to be heavy favourites against a Haiti side that certainly has its fair share of talent but is still ranked outside the world's top 50 and is making its debut in the competition.

There have been a lot of questions around the Lionesses' starting XI going into this tournament. In defence, centre-back and captain Leah Williamson is out, so that's one position that needs to be filled, and Rachel Daly has now asserted herself as a centre-forward after playing every game at left-back during the Euros last year, so that is another role up for grabs.

Ella Toone hasn't been at her best for England since establishing herself as a starter in the midfield so her place could be under threat, while there is a lot of competition across the entire front three, too, as Lauren James, Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp all bid to start out wide and Daly, Alessia Russo and Bethany England battle to lead the line.

So, who should be in Sarina Wiegman's first starting line-up of the tournament? GOAL takes a look...

  • Mary Earps England Women 2023Getty

    GK: Mary Earps

Mary Earps has been England's No.1 for some time now and that won't change going into this tournament, with her expected to start every game for her country.

The Manchester United star comes into the World Cup off the back of an excellent season, with her the best in her position across the entire Women's Super League.

    RB: Lucy Bronze

Another dead cert in this team is the inclusion of Lucy Bronze, the Lionesses' first choice right-back. England have a few different options who can play this role, but the Barcelona defender, who has just won her fourth Champions League title, will likely start every game at this tournament.

  • Millie Bright England Women 2023Getty

    CB: Millie Bright

We're soon to find out just how fit Millie Bright is. England's stand-in captain had her season ended in March due to a knee injury, but was included in the squad and expected to be back fit for this game against Haiti.

She returned to training with the team earlier this month so all the signs are positive and indicate that she will be in the line-up on Saturday, though if there are any doubts then Wiegman may elect to start either Lotte Wubben-Moy or Esme Morgan to make sure Bright is ready for the biggest test of the group stages, against Denmark.

  • Alex Greenwood England Women 2023Getty

    CB: Alex Greenwood

If Bright is fit, it's expected that her partner in defence will be Alex Greenwood. The pair played well together in the build-up to the Euros last summer, before Greenwood was benched as Williamson moved into centre-back, and are two of the best in their position in the WSL.

However, if Bright isn't fit, Wiegman could opt to play Greenwood at left-back and go for a different centre-back duo if she feels there is one better suited to each other. In England's send-off match against Portugal, she did exactly that, partnering Morgan with Jess Carter as Greenwood played full-back.

  • Jess Carter England Women 2023Getty

    LB: Jess Carter

Again, there are ifs and buts to mention here because of the questions over Bright's fitness, but if the Chelsea centre-back is good to start then it's likely that club-mate Carter will operate on the left side of defence.

Wiegman doesn't have any natural options in this role, with Morgan and Niamh Charles other versatile players who can adjust to the position, but she chose Carter to play here in both of England's matches in April.

  • Keira Walsh England Women 2023Getty

    CM: Keira Walsh

Wiegman might choose to rest the Barcelona star at some point in the tournament, but Keira Walsh will be an integral part of this England team in Australia and is unlikely to miss much action. The 26-year-old is one of the best players in the world and the way she plays in the holding midfield role makes the Lionesses tick.

  • Georgia Stanway England Women 2023Getty

    CM: Georgia Stanway

Close friends off the pitch, Georgia Stanway and Walsh also have a great relationship on it and their partnership in the deeper areas of England's midfield is extremely important to give the team balance.

This year, Wiegman has quite a few different options in the middle of the park and could rest her key players at some point, but it's likely she'll start full strength and that will mean Stanway is included.

  • Ella Toone England Women 2023Getty

    CM: Ella Toone

Another position with big questions around it is the attacking midfield role. This was filled by Fran Kirby at the Euros last summer, with Toone acting as a super sub to replace her. However, the Chelsea star has been out of action for large parts of the past year and will also miss this World Cup. In her absence, Toone has stepped into the line-up, but has struggled to make the same impact from the start as she did from the bench.

Wiegman chose to trial Lauren James in this position earlier this month and she excelled, so she is still in contention to start here against Haiti. However, with England expected to dominate and win, it could also be a great game for Toone to play herself into some form.

James, or someone else, can always be brought on to change the game if needs be.

  • Chloe Kelly England Women 2023Getty

    RW: Chloe Kelly

After ending the season in prolific fashion, Chloe Kelly looks like she could well land herself a starting spot in Wiegman's team after being the hero from the bench at Wembley last summer.

James is also vying for this spot, with Brighton's Katie Robinson likely to be a sub, but Kelly's form and experience should see her sneak ahead. That said, if she is to be in what Wiegman sees as her strongest team, she could well start on the bench in order to be in the line-up for the next match, against Denmark. It's tough to call.

  • Rachel Daly England Women 2023Getty

    ST: Rachel Daly

After scoring 22 goals in 22 league games this past season for Aston Villa, Rachel Daly deserves to lead the line for England this summer.

It was evident during the send-off match against Portugal that Daly would benefit from more starts as the No.9, with her great runs so often not found on that afternoon because of the lack of familiarity with the players around her.

England should see plenty of the ball and create a lot of chances against Haiti and that could be massively beneficial in allowing those on-pitch relationships to improve.

To start Daly would also mean Alessia Russo could revert back to the super sub role that she played so brilliantly at the Euros, too, scoring four times in six appearances from the bench.

  • Lauren Hemp England Women 2023Getty

    LW: Lauren Hemp

Completing the line-up is Lauren Hemp, probably the player who feels most assured of a place in the front three. The Man City star brings a wicked left foot to the table, as well as electric pace and a strong work ethic.

Wiegman might opt to rest her at some point in the tournament, but she's definitely a feature of England's strongest XI.
