Chong & Greenwood fire Manchester United's U19s into UEFA Youth League last 16

Manchester United's Under-19s cruised to the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League following a 6-2 victory over Young Boys that confirms them as group winners.

They have recorded emphatic results throughout the group stage, beating Juventus 4-1 and Valencia 4-0, along with the 6-2 drubbing of their Swiss opponents to secure top spot. A 2-2 draw away against Juventus have been the only points dropped in the process so far.

Striker Mason Greenwood bagged a brace in the opening half an hour and it was 2-2 after just 32 minutes. It stayed that way until the 79th minute, where a late flurry of four United goals gave the scoreline an embarrassing look.

Promising talent Tahith Chong - who featured for the senior side in pre-season - netted one of three penalties in total in the game (two for United and one for Young Boys) and Aidan Barlow, Dylan Levitt and D'Mani Bughail-Mellor all also found the net.

United's first team take on the same opponents on Tuesday night and Jose Mourinho and his men have been roundly criticised by fans after drawing 0-0 with Crystal Palace in their last match in the Premier League.

However, two wins and a draw see the Red Devils sat second in the group and a home win against a side they beat 3-0 in their last encounter coupled with Valencia failing to win against Juventus would see their passage to the knockout stages similarly secured.

Manchester City's youth side are not faring quite as well, sitting third and three points off qualification after heavy losses against Lyon and Hoffenheim in their opening two matches.

Liverpool top their group by three points, while Tottenham trail table-topping Barcelona by four points, having drawn three of their four fixtures so far.

However, United's youth teams are faring far better in Europe than domestically, with the Under-23 side currently bottom of the Premier League 2 with just four wins in 22 games.
