Jesse Gonzalez is no longer be eligible to represent Mexico on the international level after FIFA approved a one-time switch to the United States, U.S. Soccer announced Thursday.
Gonzalez was born in North Carolina and grew up in Texas but qualified for Mexico citizenship through his parents. The FC Dallas goalkeeper played for Mexico on the Under-20 and U-23 levels, although he never made a senior team appearance.
Mexico's attack needs help for Gold Cup
Gonzalez had previously turned down a U.S. call-up in January 2015 but was included on the U.S. team's 40-man preliminary Gold Cup squad this summer. He was left off the final 23-man roster but could still join Bruce Arena's side for the knockout round of next month's CONCACAF tournament.
The 22-year-old was able to make the change to the U.S. because of a FIFA rule that allows dual nationals to switch from the nation they played for at the youth level or in senior national team friendlies to another country in which they have citizenship.
