UEFA Champions League Betting Preview: Anderlecht vs. Benfica

Benfica needs a win today against Anderlecht, and after beating the Belgians 2-0 in September, the Lisbon outfit is poised to do it again today at above evens.

Anderlecht is the whipping boy of Group C, with only one point from four games along with a brutal -10 goal difference to boot. The Belgians have lost both games at home, and have failed to score in either of them, while conceding eight goals at Constant Vanden Stock Stadium. They are well on their way to finishing last in the group for the seventh consecutive time in Champions League play.

The hosts come in as 3.80 underdogs in Wednesday's tilt with Benfica, whom they lost to back on matchday one by a 2-0 score. They are also coming off a 2-1 away loss to mid-table Belgian club Royal Charleroi.

The draw selection is listed at 3.30, but I prefer the away win -- which is currently at just above evens with a payout of 2.05.

Benfica has only one win so far in its four matches (1-2-1) and requires a win here to have any ambition of advancing to the next stage. The Portuguese have yet to win on the road in Champions League play as they suffered 3-0 and 1-0 away defeats to PSG and Olympiakos, respectively. They are buoyed by a 1-0 win at home against Braga over the weekend, and I expect Jorge Jesus' team to step it up today to stay in the race for the coveted second spot. They can be taken at 2.05.

It's hard to select the over or under in this match as Anderlecht's defence has been atrocious at best, while Benfica matches have only generated an average of two goals per. I would lean to the under, but at 1.67 the value isn't really there.

The both teams to score pick is at 1.91, while a Benfica win with both teams to score is at 4.33.

Oscar Cardoso is expected to miss the game with a back injury, so instead take a look at Rodrigo Lima to score at 2.50 anytime. To score the opening or final goal of the game, he is issued at 6.50.

Just remember to check the lineups 15 minutes before kickoff before taking a correct goal scorer pick.
