  The 26-year-old had a confident game tonight, playing at right-back instead of Alvaro Arbeloa, as Raphael Varane was chosen at centre-half. The Spain international didn't stand out, but neither did he make any mistakes, and was always available as an attacking outlet on the right.

  The Portugal international helped himself to a hat-trick for his side tonight, drawing his side level from the spot, and then making it 3-1 with a close-range header, before completing his treble late on, again from the penalty spot. He looked far happier than the newspaper headlines suggested, pulling off a number of extravagant flicks in the second half.

  The 33-year-old goalkeeper could do little to stop Madrid's five goals, being beaten from the spot by Cristiano Ronaldo twice, and being let down by his defenders for Ronaldo's second and Pepe's header in the second half. Made a couple of decent saves from Higuain and Alonso in the second half.

  The full-back gave away the first-half penalty for a clumsy foul on Angel Di Maria, and the Deportivo captain looked increasily shaky as the half wore on and his legs began to tire. Replaced at half-time by Laureano.

  Like Castro, Marchena began the game solidly but lost his bearings for the third goal as Ronaldo headed home unchallenged. Managed to put in a couple of decent tackles in the second half on Benzema and Kaka late on as Madrid threatened to run riot.
