Carlos Alcaraz is plotting a stunning return to the court. The Spaniard has confirmed his participation in the US Open after four and a half months out through injury, and few comebacks have been more eagerly awaited given his standing as one of the biggest stars in the game.
Organisers confirmed on Saturday that Alcaraz will line up alongside American legend Serena Williams in the mixed doubles competition on Tuesday and Wednesday. Two of the century's greatest names will share a court before the year's final Grand Slam, which runs from 30 August to 13 September.
"Two champions.. One team" ran the official announcement, ending the speculation that had swirled around the partnership. In recent days both had teased the prospect of teaming up in mixed doubles.
Serena had reacted to a post about Alcaraz's return by writing: "Oh my God, I am so happy to see this.. you all are not ready yet". Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, fired back with eyes and hourglass emojis, hinting at a surprise on the way.
Two days later, the hints became reality. Confirmation of the pairing has turned Alcaraz's return into something far bigger than a comeback, bringing one of the sport's brightest current stars together with one of its greatest legends.
