Kaizer Chiefs Defence GFX GOAL

Will Kaizer Chiefs' brick wall of Inacio Miguel, Zitha Kwinika, ex-Orlando Pirates stars Thabiso Monyane & Paseka Mako, together with Brandon Petersen deliver the PSL title?

For a club of Amakhosi’s stature, netting only 25 league goals was underwhelming to say the least. To put that into perspective, their fiercest rivals, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, found the back of the net 43 and 65 times, respectively.

Clearly, if Chiefs were to position themselves as serious title contenders, matching those offensive numbers was a must. But just when everyone thought they needed a goal-scoring overhaul, Chiefs took a different route - one that’s putting a spotlight on their newfound defensive grit.

GOAL takes a closer look at how Amakhosi’s defence has become the backbone of their promising start this season, as they remain yet to concede a single goal.

    A new defensive fortress emerges

Four games into the new season, Chiefs’ defence has been nothing short of impenetrable. No opposition has yet managed to breach their backline, a testament to the strong leadership and blend of experience and youth at the heart of the defence. Captain Zitha Kwinika, who made his season debut against Richards Bay and followed up with a solid start against Sundowns, has been a game-changer. Paired alongside vice-captain Inacio Miguel, Kwinika’s veteran savvy and Miguel’s tenacity have formed a defensive duo as sturdy and unyielding as a brick wall protecting their goalkeeper. This leadership mix is precisely what the club needed to shore up their backline and instil confidence across the team.

Petersen, the guardian between the posts

On the goalkeeping front, Chiefs wisely chose to stick with Brandon Petersen rather than shaking things up. Petersen ended last season on a high note with a clean sheet against Polokwane City and has continued to be the rock at the base of the defence. His composure and command have provided a steadfast last line of defence, consistently denying strikers any chance of breaking through. Petersen’s performances have been instrumental in keeping Chiefs’ unbeaten defensive run alive. Chiefs reinforced in every department, bar the goalkeepers. They knew they are in safe hands.

    Mako and Monyane step up

Out wide, Chiefs seem to have found the missing pieces to their defensive puzzle in Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane. Operating on the left and right flanks respectively, these two have brought much-needed solidity and dynamism to the defense. Previously, the club leaned heavily on players like Reeve Frosler, Edmilson Dove, and Bradley Cross, but this season, new additons, Mako and Monyane have emerged as standout performers. Adding to this youthful resurgence is Aiden McCarthy, a promising academy graduate who had been impressing before an unfortunate injury sidelined him.

    Attack is the best defence

True to the adage that the best defence is a good offence, Chiefs have been channeling their energy upfront as well. The attacking trio of Gaston Sirino, Godly Lilepo, and Mduduzi Shabalala have been the catalysts, injecting pace, creativity, and threat into the team’s forward play. Their ability to keep the opposition pinned back has given the defence ample time to stay organised and maintain their resolute structure. This blend of solid defence and lively attack is starting to bear fruit in a promising balance.

    Don't ignore the goals

Who would have thought that Chiefs would start the season with four clean sheets and win three of their opening games? It’s a surprise even to the most optimistic supporters. Sitting joint top with Sekhukhune United on 10 points after four games, Amakhosi look rejuvenated and disciplined. Now that the defensive frailties of the past seem to be firmly addressed, the focus should shift toward sharpening their attacking output. Scoring more goals will be essential if Chiefs are to mount a genuine challenge and finally break their decade-long wait for the league title.
