    WHAT HAPPENED?

Amajita head coach Raymond Mdaka has clarified that Club Brugge will release Shandre Campbell for the Caf U20 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament.

There has been uncertainty on whether the sensational teenager will be available when Amajita take on their continental rivals, hoping to clinch a spot in the 2025 Fifa U20 World Cup finals.

On Campbell, Mdaka said they have a good engagement with Brugge that also involves Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.

Apart from Campbell, Mdaka said goalkeeper Lowe Fletcher, who plays for Estoril Praia in Portugal, will also be available.

    WHAT MDAKA SAID

“We have been having a very good engagement with the team [Club Brugge] for Shandre [Campbell],” said Mdaka as quoted by FARPost.

“Shandre was here in the first camp when we started building up the team. When we went to Lesotho, it was just the time he had started playing that side [in Belgium], and we decided not to include him in the squad so that he could gel with his new teammates because it was just a friendly game," he added.

“So, we said we would get him when we go to the 2024 COSAFA U20 Championships, and indeed we got him. Even now, the senior team manager is engaging with the team [Club Brugge]. So, based on our agreement, we will have Shandre and Lowe [Fletcher] on the team for the Afcon," he concluded.

This means South Africa will need their top stars available and fit for the competition.

The U20 Afcon finals will serve as the qualifiers for the 2025 U20 World Cup finals set to take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19 this year.
