    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs find themselves ninth on the Premier Soccer League table as they continue to struggle to challenge for the league title.

Problems that have been bedevling them both in attack and defence over the years appear to be still affecting the Soweto giants and the club's former captain Jimmy Tau identifies what has been letting Chiefs down.

    WHAT TAU SAID

"I think it [the problem at Chiefs] is more than scoring, it is defending, it is structure. It's a discipline," Tau said as per KickOff.

"You look at the last goal they conceded [against Polokwane City]. It's the 88th minute, the goal kick was taken by [Sibongiseni] Mthethwa, who passes to [Yusuf] Maart.

"At no point do you see the centre-backs appearing anywhere? That's a lack of discipline because you need to keep the structure of the team," added the former Amakhosi skipper.

"The fact that your two centre-backs are going to be in the build-up but then when the break happens, none of them are actually there.

"So I think there is a lot. Defensively, I think they are found wanting."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

As pointed out by Tau, Chiefs' defence has been struggling this season and the team has managed to keep just one clean sheet in 10 games across all competitions.

New signings Rushnwin Dortley and Inacio Miguel have featured mostly as twin centre-backs while Reeve Frosler and Bradley Cross have been the most used wing-backs.

Goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari was the number-one goalkeeper until recently when Brandon Petersen took over.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

While coach Nasreddine Nabi is prioritising looking for solutions in attack ahead of the PSL January transfer window, his concern is also in defence.

He would be keen to start seeing improvements at the back by keeping a clean sheet when Chiefs visit TS Galaxy on Monday.
