    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou has his contract expiring on June 30 after three seasons at the club.

But the 26-year-old is convinced he deserves to be handed a new deal as Chiefs might trigger the option of a further year on the current contract or hand him a long-term deal.

This comes after some limited game time this season due to injury.

    WHAT MATLOU SAID

"I'd say I qualify to get a new deal," said Matlou as per Sowetan Live.

"I am from an injury yes, but I am not going to use that as an excuse that I didn't play regularly. [However] the minutes I played, I gave it my all.

"Personally, I am happy with how my season has gone. I have come back strongly and I have been fighting for my spot in the playing squad. I have really worked hard when given a chance," added the former Moroka Swallows star.

"I still have to give my best for the club and I still have to win more trophies with the club because they have done a lot for me...I have to repay them, that's what I am looking forward to."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Matlou spent the first half of this season out injured and only started playing in January 2025.

He managed to make 10 Premier Soccer League appearances, but without a single goal or an assist and then featured in five Nedbank Cup games in which he made two assists.

The player has stated that he and his agent are yet to open negotiations with Chiefs for a new deal.

Matlou getting a new deal depends on coach Nasreddine Nabi having been impressed by the player's performances.
