Safa NEC seek to oust Danny Jordaan and replace him with PSL & Orlando Pirates boss Dr Irvin Khoza on an interim basis - 'It’s nothing personal'

Safa president Danny Jordaan faces a rebellion at Saturday's National Executive Committee meeting.

NEC member Bhudha Mathathe says Jordaan is not fit to lead the organisation due to the ongoing court cases against him and they plan to replace him with Premier Soccer League chairman Irvin Khoza.

“He’s on bail facing serious charges, so he should not be at the NEC, let alone chair it," Mathathe told Sowetan Live.

“We don’t want him there because he would be violating his bail conditions, which say he should not interfere with witnesses. We know that Dr Irvin Khoza is one of the witnesses. There are NEC members who may be witnesses too. It’s nothing personal – he has to follow the law.

“He [Khoza] won’t have to be there on a full-time basis. He would provide guidance. We are in a difficult financial position where we are failing to pay salaries and national teams. Dr Khoza has the expertise to get us out of these problems.”

Mathathe alleges there is a plot to thwart the rebellion by suspending him together with other NEC Members Gladwyn White and Monde Montshiwa for being outspoken about Jordaan's administration.

“I have heard I could face suspension but that won’t pass because I was elected by the Safa Congress. I can’t be suspended by NEC members,” said Mathathe.

According to Safa statutes, “only the Congress may suspend a member. However, the NEC may suspend a member that seriously violates obligations with immediate effect.”

After being re-elected as Safa president in 2022, Jordaan stated that this was his last term, having been at the held since September 2013.

But his last term has been met with legal troubles, highlighted by being hauled to court on charges of embezzlement and fraud in November 2024.

Compounding his woes was Safa's struggles to pay national teams, before they were rescued by the government.

Now the forwarding of Khoza's name as a possible interim Safa leader comes as the local football mother body has had public spats with the PSL in recent years.

They have clashed on a range of issues that include referees, national team, fixture calendars as well as even financial matters.

Saturday has now become a highly-anticipated day to see how things will pan out at the Safa NEC meeting.

It is to be seen if Jordaan would be able to successfully fight off the imminent rebellion and secure his survival.
