    WHAT HAPPENED?

Fletcher Lowe's scout Prince Sobayeni believes the Amajita goalkeeper is a natural successor to Ronwen Williams at Bafana Bafana.

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper has been Bafana's most trusted number one choice, and according to the scout, Lowe will develop and become a future senior team keeper.

    WHAT SOYABENI SAID

“He seems like the natural successor to Ronwen. It’s football, and you never know how things go — but if things go smoothly, he should be,” Sobayeni told TimesLIVE.

“He’s young. Some of us are arguing now; why not put him as the Bafana Bafana third choice? Let him get that experience because we’ve already seen the quality.

“Bafana coach Hugo Broos has said there’s a goalkeeping crisis [in emerging players] in South Africa. He mentioned Fletcher, which means he’s on the coach’s radar.”

    WHAT IS MORE

The scout also gave a bit of Lowe's background and explained how the youngster found himself in Europe.

“Fletcher is from Cape Town. He was at Ubuntu Cape Town for some years before moving to Portugal with his parents,” Sobayeni stated.

“His parents moved to Portugal for work reasons and because he was a footballer. He looked for a local club when he got there and joined a club called Oeiras, a club near where they were living [in Lisbon]," he added.

“He was scouted by a club called Alverca, the team that just gained promotion to the top division, though they were in the third division then.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lowe, who is hopeful of playing for Kaizer Chiefs in the future, shone with Amajita in the just-concluded U20 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The tall shot-stopper kept four clean sheets, made 24 saves, and emerged as the tournament's best goalkeeper.

His services were vital as South Africa conquered the continent.

Meanwhile, given the shortage of upcoming players in that department, there have been questions about who should succeed Williams.

Hugo Broos, at one point, raised the concern and even asked PSL clubs to stop over-relying on foreign goalkeepers and to start giving chances to South Africans.

Stellenbosch's Sage Stephens, 34; Orlando Pirates' Sipho Chaine, 28; and AmaZulu's Veli Mothwa, 34, are some of the local goalkeepers who are regular starters for their clubs, but given their advanced ages, they cannot be future Bafana goalkeepers after Williams.

    WHAT NEXT FOR LOWE?

After shining in Egypt, the Estoril Praia goalkeeper is expected to attract interest from other clubs.

The Portuguese-based youngster has revealed that he supports Kaizer Chiefs, and Amakhosi fans will be keen to see whether he will consider a return to South Africa and join the club.
