    WHAT HAPPENED?

Cape Town City struggled for consistency in the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League campaign.

They finished 15th on the table with 27 points, just a position higher than Royal AM, who were expelled after being caught on the wrong side of the law.

For them to keep their place in the South African top tier, they had to get past Orbit College and Castic Stars.

Orbit won the ticket to play in the PSL, and the Citizens were relegated.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, Cape Town City recently complained about the eligibility of Marumo Gallants' Monde Mpambaniso, who was allegedly improperly registered following the acquisition of the PSL status from a now-defunct Moroka Swallows ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Gallants, who finished 10th on the table with 32 points, have since failed to produce a clearance certificate.

Senior Council Nazeer Cassim has since ruled in favour of Cape Town City, with Gallants now risking being dropped.

    WHAT THE RULING SAID

“The distinguishing feature of this complaint, apropos the other two complaints, is the lack of a clearance certificate in respect of the player, Monde Mphambaniso (“MM”),” read part of the ruling delivered by Senior Council Cassim.

“There is no dispute that there was no clearance certificate issued in respect of MM from the club for whom MM played in the 2023/2024 football season.

    WHAT NEXT?

Gallants now risk points deduction and a fine of R100,000 in every match that Mpambaniso played, meaning Bahlabane Ba Ntwa might be dropped.

It might see the 2025/26 Premier Soccer League season's starting dates changed from the current August 8 to maybe later in the month.

Mpambaniso might be sanctioned for bringing the PSL to disrepute.
