Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune shows no mercy to relegated Cape Town City - 'They deserve to be relegated, let them go to the Championship'

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has blasted Cape Town City for their relegation to the National First Division.

The Citizens generally had a poor 2024/25 season, and even though they had a chance to redeem themselves via the playoffs, they did not take advantage of that and got relegated.

"Yeah, I think they proved that they deserve to be relegated. I don’t know... They didn’t take the platform seriously. To play four games and not have a single win is so poor from Cape Town City," Khune told SABC Sports.

"They should have shown the standard of the PSL so that any team from the lower division could not match them. But they did match them," he added.

"So, I think let them go to the Motsepe (Foundation) Championship and redeem themselves, and hopefully we will see them in the PSL (Betway Premiership) next year."

Cape Town City's poor campaign in the Premier Soccer League was extended to the promotion/relegation playoffs, where they did not win a single game. Orbit City were impressive in the playoffs and joined the top-tier fraternity for next season.

Orbit City outmanoeuvred Cape Town City and Casric Stars to earn their place in the top flight.

The Citizens' relegation means Cape Town will not have a team in the PSL next season.

Their biggest task now is, by focusing on their campaign in the second division, to win the title and earn an automatic slot back to the top flight.

After their relegation was confirmed, the fans were left with just one wish: that the club bounce back fast and return to the PSL as soon as possible.
