    WHAT HAPPENED?

Jose Riveiro coached Orlando Pirates for three seasons and helped the Soweto giants win five major trophies.

He also finished second in the Premier Soccer League for the three years he coached the club, as well as reaching the CAF Champions League semi-final in his last season with the Sea Robbers.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Riveiro opted for a new challenge with Egyptian champions Al Ahly, starting with the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where his team struggled.

It has not been a walk in the park for the Spaniard in the Egyptian Premier League, where he has collected one win in three games, with the remaining two ending in draws.

Some fans and former club legends have been questioning Riveiro's ability to deliver for the club, but ex-Egypt goalkeeper Ahmed Shobier believes the Al Ahly coach has not been defended like Pitso Mosimane and the likes.

    WHAT SHOBIER SAID

"I see that Riveiro has been surrendered over a little to the fans," he said as quoted by Nabd.com

"The people who are supposed to defend him are not defending him. He needs to be defended, people need to speak well of him, and he needs support, just as Al Ahly supported [Rene] Weiler, Mosimane, and [Marcel Koller] at times.

"But what I see with Riveiro is that he was handed over too early," Shobier concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Riveiro has to ensure he gets his tactics right at Al Ahly before losing control in the dressing room and fans as well.

If he fails to deliver consistently, he will risk getting fired even before the season ends since Al Ahly are unforgiving.
