    WHAT HAPPENED?

Esteghlal FC announced that Pitso Mosimane has joined the club on a one-year deal after the team succumbed to a 3-0 defeat to Zob Ahan on Friday in an Iranian Persian Gulf Pro League match under the guidance of caretaker coach Sohrab Bakhtiarizadeh.

Mosimane will be returning to football club management for the first time since he left Saudi Arabian outfit Abha in May following the team's relegation from the Roshn Pro League.

Jingles, who will bring his own technical team, has succeeded Javad Nekounam after the Iranian coach parted ways with Esteghlal earlier this month due to the team's poor start to the current season.

"The 60-year-old head coach from South Africa, Pitso Mosimane, with a bag of experience and numerous international honors, joined the great Esteghlal team with a one-year contract and took over the leadership of this team," a club statement read.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Esteghlal are currently placed 10th in a 16-team Persian Gulf Pro League standings having collected just nine points from their first eight matches including three defeats and two wins.

The Capital Blues are one of Iran's biggest football clubs, having won nine Persian Gulf Pro League titles, a joint-record seven Hazfi Cups, and two AFC Champions League trophies. The Tehran-based side have brought in Mosimane in a bid to change the team's fortunes.

The three-time Caf Champions League title-winning coach is following in the footsteps of former Bafana Bafana international Ayanda Patosi, who spent the second round of the 2018/19 season on loan from Cape Town City at Esteghlal.
