    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates were punished by Stade d'Abidjan for failing to take their chances in Group C's Caf Champions League game staged in Ivory Coast.

Bucs scored first through Evidence Makgopa from the penalty spot in the first half. It was a reward for their dominance but the lanky forward could have easily grabbed a hat-trick.

The Soweto giants then conceded in the second half courtesy of Ousmane Meita eventually giving his team a point.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

As fans clearly argued, this was not a match that needed Pirates to drop points.

Having defeated CR Belouizdad and drawn 0-0 with the defending champions Al Ahly, the Buccaneers were the favourites to win the game against a side that had lost all their initial matches.

Despite going top of Group C with five points, coach Jose Riveiro had a clear message to the players that he wasn't happy with the way they wasted the chances that could have easily won them the game.

    WHAT RIVEIRO SAID

“Well it’s a point that gives us an opportunity to be leading the group at the moment,” he said after the game.

"Three games to still play in this group, plenty of opportunities for all the teams involved, we came here intending to get maximum points.

“But there was an opponent also, who did many things very well, so if I think about the number of opportunities we didn’t use in the first 25 minutes of the game," Riveiro continued.

"Maybe it makes me a little bit disappointed with the result. But overall, with the efforts of the opponent, and very difficult circumstances to play football.

"I’m not fully happy with a point but it’s a point away from home and everything is still fully in our hands.”
