New signings and high expectations - Are Abdeslam Ouaddou's Orlando Pirates going to pip Mamelodi Sundowns to PSL title?

Nobody really knew what to expect from the new-look Orlando Pirates heading into the season. With a fresh head coach at the helm and a wave of new signings, the excitement - and uncertainty - was palpable.

Yet, when they took on Polokwane City in the MTN8, the Buccaneers delivered an impressive display of football that hinted at a promising direction. While one game can never define an entire season, Pirates certainly set a confident tone as they gear up for their first league match, showing glimpses of cohesion and quality despite the team’s recent transformation.

Looking ahead, all eyes are on Abdeslam Ouaddou as he embarks on his maiden season in charge. His ability to blend experience and fresh talent will be key, especially with influential players like Oswin Appollis - an established Bafana Bafana star - in the squad.

The foundations are laid, and with Ouaddou’s tactical vision paired with a promising roster, GOAL looks at the season ahead, promises to be an intriguing chapter for Pirates fans eager to see how this new era unfolds.

    Spain Tour: Sharpening the saw

The recent tour of Spain was a baptism by fire for the newly assembled Pirates squad. Their journey included a tough loss to Bolton Wanderers, two hard-fought draws against Pafos and Las Palmas, and an impressive victory over Granada. These mixed results offered a perfect litmus test for character and cohesion, revealing a team still finding its rhythm but brimming with potential. Their spirited performance against Polokwane City in the MTN8 title clash was particularly eye-catching, showcasing a squad that, though young and fresh, played with conviction and an evident upward trajectory. You can sense the growth and promise with every passing match.

    Transfer Business: Done and dusted

With a flurry of activity in the transfer market, it’s clear that Pirates have wrapped up their business in style. Eleven new signings have joined the Buccaneers, signaling a decisive move to sharpen the squad ahead of the new season. Not stopping there, the club has been pragmatic -loaning out two of their fresh recruits to ensure everyone gets valuable playing time while maintaining a quality core. Interestingly, Pirates and their upcoming opponents Sekhukhune United lead the pack as the two teams most active in this transfer window, and early signs suggest their aggressive recruitment strategies might just pay off.

Ouaddou: A risk taker with tactical flair

One thing is unmistakable: coach Ouaddou isn’t afraid to take risks. Against Polokwane, he boldly started both Sipho Mbule and Patrick Maswanganyi together, while also having both on the bench at different points - a rare tactical experiment. This willingness to test the waters with dual playmakers reveals a coach eager to push boundaries and innovate. Such audacity promises a Pirates side ready to spring surprises and challenge conventional tactics throughout the season. Ouaddou’s fearless approach may well be the X-factor that propels Pirates forward.

    Departures and a new-look core

Pirates’ squad refresh has brought in fresh faces while retaining a strong core. Take Yanele Mbuthuma - only 23 years old but already boasting 84 PSL appearances and 10 goals. Mbuthuma represents a promising addition, poised to fill the void left by Mohau Nkota, even though their styles differ. Meanwhile, competition is heating up as Thalente Mbatha and Makhehleni Makhaula will need to push hard to break into the team, especially with Sihle Ndluli seemingly staking claim on the anchor role. Coach Ouaddou faces a delicate balancing act; he must integrate the new talent without sidelining the experienced veterans, lest he risk unrest. Against Polokwane, Pirates wisely kept a familiar backline intact - anchored by captain Nkosinathi Sibisi, alongside Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Deon Hotto, and Bandile Shandu - ensuring stability amid the changes.

Can they build on their Polokwane City performance?

Now comes the true test: sustaining the impressive showing against Polokwane City. The Buccaneers must convince everyone this was no one-off and deliver similarly strong performances when they face Sekhukhune United in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. Pirates understand that to compete for the PSL crown, they need a start better than that of league giants Mamelodi Sundowns. This means scoring more goals, losing fewer matches, and drawing less frequently. Last season highlighted the gulf in firepower - while Sundowns’ attacking quartet of Peter Shalulile, Iqraam Rayners, Lucas Ribeiro, and Arthur Sales combined for 44 goals, Pirates as a whole managed 43. Closing this gap and enhancing their offensive threat will be crucial as they aim for glory, as they look to once again challenge the points machine that is Sundowns.
