  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs will start their Nedbank Cup campaign in the Round of 32 against third-tier outfit Free Agents.

The Glamour Boys are the most successful team in the competition's history having won it 13 times.

It will be a massive opportunity for them to get one more trophy in the annual tournament.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Last season, Amakhosi fell in the Round of 16 after failing to get past second-tier outfit Milford FC. They eventually ended the Premier Soccer League in their worst-ever position, 10th.

Coach Nasreddine Nabi was appointed to help the team end their trophy drought.

The Glamour Boys have gone 10 years without a major trophy and this season, the only realistic chance of winning something lies with their performance in the Nedbank Cup.

It is an opportunity that goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is not ready to let slip.

    WHAT PETERSEN SAID

"Obviously, you know I think [going for a decade without a trophy] will be a bit of extra motivation to the guys knowing that at the moment there's only the Nedbank Cup and the league that's still up for grabs," he said after the draw.

"So, I think realistically speaking going for this trophy and trying to change our fortunes and obviously using that as a motivation, as a stepping stone.

“So, I think this time around I have a feeling it will be quite different and hopefully, God willing, we can go all the way," he continued.

  • AND WHAT IS MORE

Petersen conceded he knows nothing about Free Agents, but underlined the importance of taking them seriously to avoid a shocking result.

"To be honest with you, no, it’s the first time tonight I saw that name but I think if the past is anything to go by, I think there's no team you can underestimate in the Nedbank Cup,” he added.

“You know it's full of surprises and hopefully this season, this time around, we can turn our fortunes in the Nedbank Cup and add to that trophy cabinet and to the history of being the most successful club in the Nedbank Cup," Petersen concluded.
