    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns are determined to go one better than last season’s CAF Champions League campaign, where they were knocked out in the semi-finals by Espérance. This time, they face Africa’s most successful club, Al Ahly, in what promises to be a blockbuster tie.

The first leg will be played at home, and Masandawana are hoping to use their Pretoria fortress to gain an advantage. Since joining in January, Jayden Adams has blended seamlessly into the squad, contributing three goals and two assists. His performances have added fresh energy to an already star-studded midfield.

Speaking ahead of the match, Adams called the upcoming semi-final “the biggest game” of his career. He emphasized the importance of scoring goals at home to carry a lead into the tough return leg in Cairo.

    WHAT ADAMS SAID

“I think the preparation is going well after coming from a loss against Chiefs, going into this one, especially Sundowns are a very good team against another one, in Al Ahly, it’s a nice experience for us and we’re prepared well,” Adams said as reported by iDiski Times.

“The focus is more on us beating them here, so away it’s very difficult [in Cairo]. We need to score as much goals as possible here to make it easier for ourselves going away, where they are very good in the Champions League, they know how to win trophies.”

“The mood is good, the [Chiefs game] is behind us now, we move on to the next one, so I think they mindset and focus from the players is on Al Ahly, we’re preparing well,” Adams said.

“I think this is the biggest [game of my career so far], I’m very excited and especially because it’s a CAF game, the club wants to win trophies, wants to get another star, so we’re going to work on that.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite dominating domestically, Sundowns have missed out on all three knockout competitions this season, which puts extra weight on their CAF Champions League hopes. A good performance and a place in the final would restore pride and ambition.

Adams echoed Miguel Cardoso’s sentiments that the Kaizer Chiefs defeat must be put aside. All eyes are now firmly on beating Al Ahly and reaching the continental showpiece.
