    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a 2-1 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs, ending their hopes of winning a domestic knockout trophy this season.

However, they remain firmly in control of the league title race and are on course to win the PSL for the eighth time in a row.

The focus now shifts to continental glory as they prepare to face Al Ahly in the Caf Champions League semi-final first leg this weekend.

Head coach Miguel Cardoso addressed the media ahead of the clash, urging his players to put the Chiefs loss behind them.

He emphasised the importance of mental strength and staying focused on the task at hand.

Sundowns are aiming to reach the final and claim their second continental title.

A positive result at home could set the tone for a strong finish in Cairo.

    WHAT CARDOSO SAID

“We have a tough competition ahead against such a strong team – [it’s] obviously a challenge. But we have to beat them. The club did win in the past, so let’s try our best,” he said as reported by Sowetan.

“And from there we will hope we will have a final to play and several league matches to play until the end, and to raise trophies.

“It was not our best game. We should have done better, we can do better. But let’s not penalise ourselves too much. I don’t think we get more energy out of a loss ... [but] I think we should have started stronger against Amakhosi.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sundowns have won their last three home matches against Al Ahly, a record they will be confident in extending.

Key striker Peter Shalulile, who has already netted three goals in the competition this season, has a solid track record against the Egyptian giants.

He has four goals in total against Al Ahly and will be looking to increase that tally.

The team’s experience, depth, and hunger to win on the continental stage make them one of the favourites.

A win this weekend would move them one step closer to achieving the club’s ultimate continental ambition.
