    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since returning from the FIFA Club World Cup campaign, Ribeiro has been at loggerheads with the Tshwane giants.

While he has been linked with several clubs - in Belgium, France, Brazil, and even Qatar - the 2024/25 PSL Player of the Season has pushed to terminate his contract with Sundowns.

In fact, he was on the verge of joining Qatar SC, where he was tipped to fill the void left by Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau.

However, Qatar SC did not continue with transfer talks with Sundowns and opted to set their focus on Yokohama F. Marinos attacker Yan Mateus, who is Ribeiro's compatriot.

    WHAT NEXT FOR RIBEIRO?

Ribeiro has been at loggerheads with Sundowns, and the issue has escalated into a legal tussle since he has a running contract with the PSL giants.

He is understood to have escalated the matter to the FIFA Dispute and Resolution Chamber, hoping the European-based body will help him get released by Sundowns.

Ribeiro is pegging his hope against Sundowns on what is popularly known as the 'Diarra Ruling'. This refers to a landmark judgement by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) that declared some provisions of FIFA's player transfer regulations to be incompatible with EU law.

However, since Sundowns do not fall under the EU jurisdiction, it is a matter of waiting and seeing how the FIFA DRC will rule in the Ribeiro case.
