Khanyisa Mayo is back in the Premier Soccer League after an unsuccessful time at Algerian side CR Belouizdad last season.

That saw him being loaned out to Kaizer Chiefs for this term as he tries to get himself back to his best form after scoring six goals in 36 games last term.

His father, Patrick, says Mayo did not flop in Algeria and advises his son on how to make a return to the Bafana Bafana squad.

Mayo Snr tells Khanyisa what to do

“Being home will help him,” Mayo Snr told iDiski Times.
“He needs to work hard, score goals for the club and then the national team will come. But you cannot expect to play for Bafana if you are not doing well for your club.
“He learnt a lot outside the country. Football there is very physical; the culture and language are different, and he had to adapt. He started well in his first season, but coaching changes affected him," added the former Bafana Bafana star.
“I won’t say he failed – he gained experience. That experience will help him here [in SA].”

Impressing Broos a mammoth task for Mayo

Convincing Broos that he deserves to be part of the Bafana set-up could prove to be a mammoth task for Mayo as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals loom.

The Chiefs star has always been overlooked by the Belgian, even when he scored 12 PSL goals and 10 during the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, respectively.

He scored these goals at a time when most Bafana forwards were struggling to reach double figures for their clubs.

    What comes next?

When Chiefs return after the FIFA break, Mayo will be ineligible to play in their CAF Confederation Cup against AS Simba as he is unregistered.

But he has a chance to prove Broos wrong when PSL action resumes, as he has little time to change the coach's mind to be considered for AFCON.
