  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Premier Soccer League newbies Magesi FC shocked South Africans with a 2-1 win over favourites Mamelodi Sundowns at the Free State Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on November 23.

    Apart from winning a R6.85 million prize, Dikwena tsa Meetse earned the right to play a selected Carling Knockout All-Stars as voted by the fans.

    The organisers gave the fans a chance to vote for their best players to make the Carling Knockout XI that will play Magesi.

    Kaizer Chiefs have Gaston Sirino, Ashley du Preez, and Naledi Hlongwane in the starting XI. Orlando Pirates have Sipho Chaine, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Dimpho Madalane, Jabulani Mokone, and Relebohile Mofokeng while Sundowns have Asekho Tiwani, Gomolemo Kekana, and Bathusi Aubaas.

    Jose Riveiro will have a chance to coach the team once again.

    WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

    "The All-Star team is a mix of experience and the next generation; with five players coming from Diski sides and the other six from the first teams campaigning in the Premier Soccer League," read a statement from the organisers.

    Carling Black Label's Brand Director is optimistic about an entertaining fixture, "As the exciting Carling Black Label Cup looms, we reflect on a campaign that has already seen over four million votes cast.

    "The Carling All-Star team, with a squad wholly selected by champion fans in a never-seen-before mash-up, will be looking to defend the trophy they won last year.”

    "It will be interesting to see; can the Magesi FC team of giant slayers, slay a team of collective giants in the spiritual home of South African football!? 

    "We encourage the fans to get their tickets early for something that will truly be special."

    Riveiro was in charge of the Carling Knockout All-Stars team that beat Stellenbosch 2-1 last year.

    He will be aiming at completing a double against Magesi on December 21 at the Orlando Stadium.
