    WHAT HAPPENED?

Amakhosi legend Marks Maponyane has come down hard on Kaizer Chiefs skipper Yusuf Maart, questioning his leadership credentials after another derby defeat. Chiefs lost to Orlando Pirates again, marking their second league loss to their bitter rivals this season.

The result puts Amakhosi’s top eight hopes in serious danger with only two games left in the campaign. Maponyane, known for his goal-scoring exploits and time at both Soweto giants, believes the skipper is not delivering the standards expected from a club captain.

He went as far as to say the midfielder “can’t even make a simple pass,” raising doubts over his influence on the pitch. The criticism has ignited debate among supporters about whether the midfielder deserves to keep the armband. With pressure mounting, Maart and his teammates now face a defining moment in the club’s troubled season.

    WHAT MAPONYANE SAID

You cannot leave this discussion without criticising the captain of Kaizer Chiefs. How can you have a captain who has no leadership skills? Like I saw last time, he tried a crossfield pass and it ended up in row 45," he said on Radio 2000 as reported by Farpost.

“I mean, you can’t do that. You have to measure it or aim it at your teammates or the other side of the field. So, those are the things that make you think that a simple pass to your wide teammate cannot end up in the stands. That doesn’t make sense to me.

“There are no leaders in this team, and the reason is simple: you cannot lead when you are not confident, and you cannot be confident when you are not winning.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Yusuf Maart has been at Kaizer Chiefs for three years, and with his contract nearing its end, questions loom over his future at Naturena.

Despite the criticism, he still has an opportunity to turn things around by helping the club win silverware.

Amakhosi will face arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final, offering one last shot at redemption.

Victory would break their painful 10-year trophy drought and allow Maart to lift silverware as the club's captain. It’s a make-or-break moment for both the captain and the club.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

A titanic clash awaits in a sold-out Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Kaizer Chiefs have a shot at glory, but must overcome Jose Riveiro’s well-drilled Bucs. Riveiro will be determined to defend the title before he departs his post. The stakes couldn’t be higher for both sides.
