    WHAT HAPPENED?

After Itumeleng Khune's exit from Kaizer Chiefs, the majority of Amakhosi faithful expected Nigeria international Stanley Nwabali to replace him.

The towering shot-stopper had a good display at Chippa United, that followed by a good performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the Super Eagles reach the final.

However, the Amakhosi management opted to go for the Rwanda international Fiacre Ntwari, who had done well at TS Galaxy.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ntwari started the season as the Chiefs' first-choice goalkeeper, but he struggled to settle, failing to keep the team in crucial games by conceding relatively soft goals.

Brendan Petersen was tried, but just like the Amavubi star, he failed to grab the opportunity.

The current first choice, Bvuma, is not getting it right either, and has conceded 21 goals in the last 20 matches.

Nwabali is still the Nigeria goalkeeper, and has retained his place at Chippa. He has nine clean sheets in 21 league games.

The custodian is still rumoured to be on Chiefs' radar, alongside European teams like Queens Park Rangers of England.

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has advised Nwabali ahead of a potential exit from Chippa.

    WHAT AKPEYI SAID

“You can have as much talent as you want, you can have so many clubs knocking on your door. But if you don’t work hard, then you are not prepared to take them [opportunities]," he told FARPost.

“Your career can take a wrong and a difficult direction if everything does not go down to working hard. I was at Chippa United for four years. And I worked hard for myself to get recognised and landed a move to Chiefs.

“As a goalkeeper who wants to rise, you need to keep challenging yourself. You must accept that you can learn at any age. If you keep challenging yourself and you keep trying to get better, this is how you actually improve yourself," Akpeyi continued.

“He [Nwabali] has done well for himself and the national team. I think he has already established himself well enough to make a move. But he has to make sure the time is right and that the club is also right. I think this is the only way to have a successful career and actually make the most of it," he concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Nwabali has done well in helping the Chilli Boys get into the top eight, with a couple of games remaining to end the ongoing campaign.

It is interesting to see whether Nasreddine Nabi will consider having him in the Amakhosi team.
