    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Junior Khanye has explained why Lebohang Maboe could be the best transfer business Amakhosi have conducted so far.

Khanye said whoever identified the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder as well as Luke Baartman should be given credit because, according to him, they are suitable players for Chiefs.

    WHAT KHANYE SAID

"It's good that Chiefs could sign Maboe. It's the first time I agree with them. We have to give credit where it's due. You see, whoever identified this guy and Luke Baartman, I compliment them for signing these guys," Khanye told Soccer Laduma.

"Let me compliment them about Maboe. Let me compliment these two players without jealousy. I said, 'When they do the right thing, I will change'," he added.

The retired forward also explained exactly what Maboe will offer and why his services are what the Soweto giants needed.

"Maboe is one of the best defensive midfielders. But we have to talk about a specific position. Best defensive midfielder. They were lacking a player of Maboe's calibre. Fearless, very comfortable on the ball."

"Hard-working. He links defence with attack. He is a very experienced international player. Played in the Champions League with Sundowns. Chiefs were short of a player like him. I applaud them for that. Now the coach has to use him in the right way."

    WHAT IS MORE

Khanye also said he was shocked by Mamelodi Sundowns' decision to let the midfielder go and added that he would have loved to see Sipho Mbule and Maboe combine at Chiefs.

"Chiefs have made a great signing! I am surprised that Sundowns had released him. But, anyway, Sundowns have many players, and players like Maboe cannot just stay without playing. He is one of the best defensive midfielders, but at Sundowns, he could not play because Sundowns have many options," he stated.

"Sometimes you have many top players in your position. Sometimes luck has to be on your side. They should have signed a number 10 for him. They have signed a quality player. They are just short of a midfielder who would complement him." Khanye continued.

"For me, Maboe is underrated in South Africa. But with the experience he is bringing to Kaizer Chiefs, he played for the best team on the continent. He is not coming from just an ordinary squad. He has a lot of experience. I would have loved to see Maboe play with Sipho Mbule at Chiefs. They could have made a deadly combination together. But I compliment Chiefs for signing Maboe."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Maboe was unveiled on Tuesday and became Amakhosi's 10th signing in the transfer window. His arrival came after Etiosa Ighodaro, Luke Baartman, and Asanele Velebayi had recently been announced as the new Glamour Boys.

The experienced midfielder has always been praised because of his versatility; he can be deployed in various positions in the midfield to satisfying effect.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR MABOE?

Given how good he was before, especially at Sundowns, Chiefs fans are eager to see whether Maboe will replicate the same as he returns to his boyhood club.

The 30-year-old star landed at Naturena a day before Masandawana's visit for a Premier Soccer League game at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday and he watched from the stands as the two teams drew 0-0.
