    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs announced Khanyisa Mayo as their 11th signing of the season after securing the services of the forward from Algerian side CR Belouizdad.

After the North Africans opted against registering him for the new season, Mayo arrives at Chiefs on a one-year loan deal with Amakhosi having an obligation to buy him at the end of this season.

    WHAT WAS SAID

"Kaizer Chiefs are proud to announce the one-year loan signing of Khanyisa Mayo, who returns to South Africa after a season with CR Belouizdad in Algeria," Chiefs said in a statement.

Motaung Jr then explained why they settled for the former Cape Town City star.

“It’s no secret that we wanted to bring Khanyisa to Naturena before his move to Algeria,” said Motaung Jr.

“He has a proven track record in the league, and we believe he will add significant value to the squad this season when we play in the league, as well as on the continent.

"He joins a select group of athletes who’ve made their families proud by following in their footsteps. We are truly happy to have him here and wish him all the best.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After years of Chiefs being sharply criticised for having a blunt strikeforce, they now have few excuses should their frontrunners struggle for goals.

There is now depth in attack as Mayo becomes the third forward to be signed this season after Flavio Silva and Etiosa Ighodaro.

They join Ashley du Preez, Glody Lilepo and Tashreeq Morris upfront, and that is expected to make competition in attack stiffer.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAYO?

Mayo is expected to arrive in South Africa from Algeria next week to start life at Naturena.

For someone who already had full pre-season training with Belouizdad, he is expected to be match fit to start playing for the Soweto giants as he seeks to turn himself into coach Nasreddine Nabi's first-choice striker.
