    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs have ended a ten-year trophy drought by winning the Nedbank Cup, a triumph that also secures their place in next season’s Caf Confederation Cup. Captain Yusuf Maart was the hero of the moment, scoring the decisive goal late in the final and sending thousands of Amakhosi fans into scenes of wild celebration.

Despite the historic win, Maart has not been free from criticism, with some club legends, including Marks Maponyane, questioning his leadership qualities. However, in the wake of the victory, Inacio Miguel, who is the deputy, has come out in full support of the captain, dismissing any rumours of tension between them.

He emphasized that he is respected within the squad and is seen as a great leader who has stepped up when it mattered most.

    WHAT MIGUEL SAID

“I have huge respect for Yusuf. Yusuf is my captain. I respect him a lot ... he has a lot of leadership skills. I don't see any difference when it's me or him wearing the armband because we're two great leaders,'' Miguel said as reported by Sowetan.

“For me, he's my leader. He has played a huge role for the team. He gives the face of the team; he never hides. He has a lot of personality and character ... I love him a lot. I can't say that if I were the captain, things would have been better, no.”

“A lot of people doubted us, but look at us now. It was written, no one can take this away from us. This is a feeling we've been searching for so long. This will stay in my memory for so long."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kaizer Chiefs legend Marks Maponyane has remained skeptical of Yusuf Maart’s leadership qualities, publicly questioning whether the midfielder has what it takes to lead a club of Amakhosi’s stature.

However, Maart responded in the best way possible, stepping up with a commanding performance in the Soweto Derby victory over Orlando Pirates.

His composure under pressure and a crucial late strike in the Nedbank Cup final silenced many of his critics. Maart’s contribution proved vital in ending Chiefs’ ten-year trophy drought and guiding the team to long-awaited silverware.

    WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS?

Kaizer Chiefs now turn their attention to securing a top-eight finish in the league.

With two league matches remaining, against Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City, Amakhosi will be aiming to collect maximum points.

A strong finish would not only boost their confidence but also allow them to end the season on a positive note.
