    WHAT HAPPENED?

Retired goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo, who once played for AmaZulu, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, launched a surprising attack on former teammate Itumeleng Khune. The 35-year-old Khuzwayo made 34 appearances during his six-year stay at Amakhosi, often playing second fiddle to the fan-favorite from Ventersdorp.

Recently, Khune addressed those comments, expressing confusion and disappointment. He believed he had a healthy and professional relationship with Khuzwayo during their time at Naturena. Khune also denied receiving any special treatment from coaches, stating that he always earned his spot. The comments have shocked fans, given the mutual respect they were thought to have shared.

    WHAT KHUNE SAID

“I saw Brilliant Khuzwayo coming out to attack me, saying other coaches did favours for me,” Khune said, as reported by iDiski Times.

“But I don’t understand where he takes that from because we used to train together. We used to compete, and we used to have healthy competition. And if you had to go compare, you will see that he stood no chance of playing when I was fit because of what I did on the field whether at training, whether at Chiefs or Bafana Bafana.

“It’s his own opinion. I respect it. I respect his opinion."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Both Khune and Khuzwayo have retired, though the latter was forced out due to injury. Khune has since taken up the role of an analyst, while the new era of goalkeepers has taken center stage.

Among them, Ronwen Williams has risen as the continent’s best, finishing in the top 10 for the Yachine Trophy. This transition reflects a new generation of goalminders taking charge for both club and country.

Interestingly, both Khune and Khuzwayo played for Chiefs and Pirates respectively, who will now battle in the Nedbank Cup final. The final offers Amakhosi a real chance to end a decade-long trophy drought and a chance for Nasreddine Nabi to prove if what he is cooking can be dished out.
