    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Gaston Sirino has conceded that his chances of ever playing for Bafana Bafana are marginally slim.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star pointed out the number of quality players available for South Africa and his age as key factors that limit the possibility of playing for the former African champions.

    WHAT SIRINO SAID

"Of course, everyone wants to play for a national team. So, I’m here now with a possibility of playing for Bafana Bafana. But the hard thing is that I’m not young, and we have too many good players here, so that is the reality with regard to Bafana Bafana," Sirino told the media.

"I think Bafana Bafana are good now, and they play very well and differently, so that is good. Uruguay is a small country with about 3.5 million people, but we have too many good players."

Sirino has not been capped for his country of birth, Uruguay, and says despite the fact that it has a small population, there are good players at top clubs for the South American nation.

"All the national team players are with big clubs, so it is difficult for us to get the chance. At times, you need luck to play in the national team, but the reality is that in Uruguay, there are too many players at the top level," says Sirino, whose family is settled in South Africa.

"I’m very happy with my family here. Everyone is like my family now, so I’m very happy," Sirino concluded.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sirino's possibility of playing for Bafana is not a new topic. When Themba Zwane was injured and South Africa was set to play the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, the Uruguayan was touted as a potential replacement.

But Hugo Broos was not keen on calling up the experienced midfielder, arguing that he was old and not the type of player he was looking for and wanted somebody younger than Zwane.

Sirino, a naturalised South African citizen, is right to admit the fact that a cap for Bafana will forever remain a far-fetched dream.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SIRINO?

Currently, Sirino's focus is on the Nedbank Cup final between Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

The final will be played on May 10 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, and the midfielder has already expressed his desire to win it for Chiefs.
