Hugo Broos on Cassius Mailula playing at Wydad Athletic Club with Rhulani Mokwena and a potential move to Europe in the future

Cassius Mailula had an excellent start to life at Mamelodi Sundowns after getting promoted by the then-coach Rhulani Mokwena.

His exploits caught the attention of several teams from Europe.

The attacker eventually sealed a move to North America where he signed for FC Toronto.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was among those who felt the move to FC Toronto was ill-advised.

Things did not go as planned for Mailula as he struggled for game time, and he eventually joined Mokwena's Wydad Athletic Club.

In Morocco, Mailula has seemingly managed to get his mojo back and is among the impact players helping the club to climb the table after a run of one defeat in their last 11 Botola Pro matches.

Broos is happy with Mailula's progress in Morocco where is a regular.

“You saw with Mailula? I think I said from the first minute what was he going to do in Toronto because I saw immediately that there were two ex-international Italian strikers and a striker from the National Team of America; what was Mailula going to do there?

“Now he is at Wydad [Athletic Club] and plays because Rhulani [Mokwena] is there. Maybe he can do the step later again to Europe," he told the media according to Far Post.

Mailula's recent form might be what Broos wanted to see before considering him for the forthcoming Bafana Bafana assignments.

South Africa are set to resume the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in March before taking part in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
