    What is the Home of Legends Cup

    The inaugural edition of a one-day tournament was staged in Gqeberha on November 16, 2024, with four teams participating in it.

    The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium hosted this competition after staging the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Bafana Bafana and Congo-Brazzaville in October.

    The Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency organised the tournament.

    Home of Legends Cup participants, fixtures and kickoff times

    The tournament consisted of four teams: Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Golden Arrows and Chippa United. Arrows were eliminated after losing to Amakhosi in the first semi-final match on Saturday morning, while Masandawana defeated Chippa in the second match of the day.

    According to chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Development Agency Anele Qaba, participants were chosen on availability.

    Prize money for the winners

    Home of the Legends Cup champions, Chiefs, walked away with R1,5 million and that prize money is likely to motivate the Soweto giants.

    The organisers of this tournament did not disclose if the losing semi-finalists and runners-up would be financially rewarded.

    Team news

    On Friday, Chiefs released a statement announcing that coach Nasreddine Nabi would not travel to Gqeberha after undergoing a medical procedure.

    "Chiefs head to Gqeberha without Nabi Head Coach, Nasreddine Nabi, who is recovering at home after recently undergoing a minor orthopedic operation will not travel to Gqeberha," Amakholsi said in a statement.

    "Assistant coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze will take charge of the team that will face Golden Arrows in this weekend’s Home of Legends Cup."

    The Soweto giants were also without defenders Thatayaone Ditlhokwe and Rushwin Dortley who are on international duty with Botswana and Bafana Bafana respectively.

    Sundowns had at least 10 players unavailable due to national team commitments while others like Themba Zwane, Rivaldo Coetzee and Siyabonga Mabena were injured.

    Chippa United were without goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali who was with the Nigeria national team and also lost his father.

    Uganda goalkeeper Ismail Watenga was missing in action for Golden Arrows.
