    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Kaizer Chiefs utility player Patrick Mayo has revealed that the Premier Soccer League side called him to enquire about the possibility of signing his son, Khanyisa Mayo.

Mayo Senior said he told Amakhosi that it is up to his son to decide whether he will join the Soweto giants or not. However, he is categorical that should that move happen, he would be a proud father.

    WHAT MAYO SENIOR SAID

"Yes, Kaizer Chiefs called me last week to find out if I would give Khanyisa my blessing to join the club. It is Khanyisa who will decide whether he wants to join them," Mayo senior told KickOff.

"I told Chiefs I would be happy to see Khanyisa at the club because that would be a historic moment. He would be following in his father's footsteps, and that would make me a proud father," he added.

"But I did make it clear to Chiefs that if they are genuinely interested, they should speak to his current club and buy him, as his contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 season."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chiefs concluded their pre-season in the Netherlands, where they only scored three goals in five games. It is evident that Nasreddine Nabi's striking department still needs to be sharpened even more given how the strikers struggled in front of goal.

When Amakhosi failed to qualify for the MTN8 after finishing ninth in the 2024/25 season, Nabi complained that Chiefs would not have struggled if they had a lethal striker.

To strengthen the department, Chiefs have so far signed Flavio Silva. The arrival of Ethan Chislett, who can play as a 10, an 8 or a wide midfielder, is expected to help the attacking department by creating much-needed goal-scoring chances.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAYO?

The forward is currently with CR Belouizdad of Algeria, and Chiefs fans will be keen to see whether the club will indeed actualise the transfer after the father's revelation.

For Chiefs, after concluding their pre-season tour in the Netherlands, their focus will be on the Toyota Cup, where they are set to face Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko on July 26.
