    WHAT HAPPENED?

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has weighed in on whether Hugo Broos should call Kaizer Chiefs star Gaston Sirino to the Bafana Bafana squad or not.

A section of Bafana supporters have been calling for Sirino to be added to Broos' team as he is eligible to play for the South African football team.

The 33-year-old dribbling has been in the country for more than five years - having arrived in SA to join the Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018.

Speaking on the Soccerbeat YouTube Channel, Hunt has seemingly backed the idea of neutralising Sirino - believing he has what it takes to help the SA soccer team qualify for major tournaments.

    WHAT HUNT SAID

"There's no doubt if Gaston Sirino was South African, I think he would definitely be in the squad. Even if he had Themba Zwane, because I think he's so quick and nimble, across the ground, he suits the way we play the game here," Hunt said as quoted by Soccer Laduma.

"But to put him in the team now… But in saying that, the most important thing is to qualify isn't it? And then worry about all the politics afterward.

"I don't think it will happen now but if he was South African, of course. It still baffles me what happened there, why he left Sundowns.''

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sirino has been playing a starring role in the rejuvenated Chiefs under Nasreddine Nabi this season so far. He scored two goals and registered three assists in four games for Amakhosi.

This is not the first time South Africans called for the inclusion of Sirino in the Bafana squad. They did so when he was still playing for Mamelodi Sundowns a few years ago.

With age not on his side, he is likely not to be recognised by the national team coach, considering that Broos has preferred giving youngster players a chance as he continues to rebuild Bafana.

    WHAT NEXT?

Broos will announce his preliminary squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers soon and it remains to be seen whether he will call Sirino or not.

Bafana will take on Uganda and South Sudan in a crucial Group K Afcon qualifiers in November. For now, Sirino will continue to help Chiefs improve as they seek to compete with the likes of Orlando Pirates and Sundowns in the PSL.
